ABSTRACT:The goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.) has its first reports in China where it was used as a medicinal plant. The goji berry is a fruit with a great antioxidant potential due to the presence of flavonoids, besides being a source of an analogue of ascorbic acid named 2-O-β-D-Glucopyranosyl Ascorbic Acid or AA2βG and as a natural source of carotenoid zeaxhantin. It also has specific polysaccharides that can increase the antioxidant enzymes activity. Nowadays it is offered in the market promising weight loss. Studies using its juice as a drink showed a possible decrease in waist circumference in individuals who uses daily this drink. However, the 2-O-β-D-Glucopyranosyl ascorbic acid properties (effective in the treatment of Osteogenic Disorder Shionogi (ODS)), and zeaxanthin (important in preventing Age-Related Macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD)), are not properly valued by health area yet. The goji berry intake may cause allergy to the patients who have already been sensitized with tomato, as well as presenting some interaction with antiplatelet drugs, reducing its efficacy. Dehydrated samples of goji berry were analyzed in Spain and have been found altered levels of metals and pesticides, demonstrating the importance of product origin identification. Key words: Lycium barbarum L., goji berry, foods for weight loss, 2-O-β-DGlucopyranosyl ascorbic acid, zeaxhantin, goji berry allergy. INTRODUÇÃOConhecida desde longa data na China, a "goji...
