O assédio moral é caracterizado como violência psicológica, sutil, dissimulada, intencional, de caráter repetitivo e prolongado, na qual o agressor tem a intenção de humilhar e excluir socialmente uma pessoa no contexto da atividade laboral. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar e caracterizar a prevalência de assédio moral nas carreiras públicas brasileiras, bem como descrever os meios empregados para impedir este tipo de violência no trabalho. Para isto, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura. Verificou-se que o assédio moral nas carreiras públicas predomina de forma descendente em que o superior assedia seus subordinados. As principais consequências do assédio são estresse, burnout, depressão, ansiedade, febre emocional, medo, tristeza, choro, dificuldade de concentração, redução da capacidade laborativa, sentimento de solidão e inadequação, transtorno de pânico, hipertensão arterial, gastrite, esofagite de refluxo e outras diferentes formas de sofrimento no trabalho. Destacaram-se como medidas para prevenir e impedir o assédio moral: formação de grupos de apoio às vítimas, criação de comissões setoriais de combate ao assédio moral compostas por membros altamente capacitados sobre o tema, ações judiciais e ações de conscientização e informação sobre assédio moral. Este estudo contribui para a literatura, pois verificou-se a escassez de estudos relacionados às práticas para prevenir e impedir o assédio moral no setor público. Por fim, evidencia a necessidade de implementar medidas preventivas de divulgação e conscientização do assédio moral como forma de educar os servidores públicos à cultura do respeito e consideração da dignidade humana do próximo.
