A importância da água para a vida e saúde dos seres vivos é inegável. A disponibilidade de água de qualidade para consumo humano tem sido cada vez mais uma grande preocupação pois essa pode ser fonte de contaminação e origem de doenças. Vários patógenos podem ser transmitidos pela água não tratada ou tratada de maneira inadequada. Contaminantes fecais que chegam aos sistemas de abastecimento podem levar à transmissão de doenças e, assim, é fundamental monitorar as redes e estações de abastecimento para atingir um padrão ideal de qualidade da água para consumo quanto à presença potencial de patógenos. Entre os patógenos mais comuns estão os coliformes totais e os coliformes termotolerantes. Escherichia coli é considerada uma das principais bactérias deste segundo grupo e sua presença indica contaminação recente por matéria fecal. Dessa forma, o objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade microbiológica de amostras de água coletadas em seis bairros da cidade de Mandaguaçu, Paraná. Não foi encontrado crescimento de bactérias do tipo coliforme em nenhuma das amostras analisadas. Portanto, os resultados apresentados neste estudo indicam que as amostras de água pesquisadas estavam dentro dos padrões de potabilidade, isto é, próprias para consumo humano.Palavras-chave: Coliformes.
