We mapped the inferred long-distance migrations of four species of Amazonian goliath catfishes (Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii, B. platynemum, B. juruense and B. vaillantii) based on the presence of individuals with mature gonads and conducted statistical analysis of the expected long-distance downstream migrations of their larvae and juveniles. By linking the distribution of larval, juvenile and mature adult size classes across the Amazon, the results showed: (i) that the main spawning regions of these goliath catfish species are in the western Amazon; (ii) at least three species—B. rousseauxii, B. platynemum, and B. juruense—spawn partially or mainly as far upstream as the Andes; (iii) the main spawning area of B. rousseauxii is in or near the Andes; and (iv) the life history migration distances of B. rousseauxii are the longest strictly freshwater fish migrations in the world. These results provide an empirical baseline for tagging experiments, life histories extrapolated from otolith microchemistry interpretations and other methods to establish goliath catfish migratory routes, their seasonal timing and possible return (homing) to western headwater tributaries where they were born.
Assessing the effectiveness of protected areas for sustaining species and identifying priority sites for their conservation is vital for decision making, particularly for freshwater fishes in South America, the global centre of freshwater fish diversity. Several conservation planning studies have used threatened freshwater fishes or species that are vulnerable to climate change as conservation targets, but none has included both in priority‐setting analysis. The objectives of this study were to identify gaps in the coverage of the existing protected areas in representing the endemic freshwater fishes of the Tropical Andes region, and to identify conservation priority areas that adequately cover threatened species and species vulnerable to climate change. Data on 648 freshwater fishes from the Tropical Andes were used to identify gaps in the protected area coverage, and to identify conservation priority sites under three scenarios: (i) prioritize threatened species; (ii) prioritize species that are vulnerable to climate change; and (iii) prioritize both threatened species and species vulnerable to climate change. A total of 571 species (88% of all species) were not covered by any protected areas; most of them are restricted to ≤10 catchments. To represent both threatened species and species vulnerable to climate change in the third scenario, 635 catchments were identified as priority areas, representing 26.5% of the study area. The number of irreplaceable catchments for this scenario is 475, corresponding to 22.5% of the total area. The results of this study could be crucial for designing strategies for the effective protection of native fish populations in the Tropical Andes, and for planning proactive climate adaptation. It is hoped that the identification of priority areas, particularly irreplaceable catchments, will help to guide conservation and management decisions in the Andean region.
SummaryLength-weight relationships (LWRs) for 23 freshwater fish species from the Andean Amazon piedmont in Peru are presented in this study. Fishes were captured between 2009 and 2010 on lagoons from three basins; Amazonas (Ampiyacu and Apayacu) and Ucayali (Pachitea) using gillnets. In this study, new LWRs are reported for 20 species of 23 species analyzed. The study provides new information on less-studied species and can serve as a basis for management of fisheries and conservation of this area.
This study presents an extensive review of published and unpublished occurrence records of fish species in the Loreto department. Located in the northeast of the country, Loreto is the most geographically extensive region in the Peruvian territory. Despite the increase in fish collections in Loreto in recent years, the ichthyofauna of this department needs to be more documented. Based on a database of scientific collections and bibliographic information, an updated checklist of the freshwater fishes from Loreto is presented. The results reveal a rich and diversified ichthyofauna, with 873 species distributed in 331 genera, 50 families and 15 orders. The main groups are Characiformes (42.6%), Siluriformes (34.8%), Gymnotiformes (8.6%) and Cichliformes (7.4%). Part of the ichthyofauna has restricted distribution for Loreto (4.7%). In addition, 9.0% of species from Loreto are used in fisheries. Meanwhile, 219 species (25%) were categorized according to the IUCN criteria where only six species (0.7%) are currently considered threatened species (CR, EN or VU). The results presented in this work indicate that this department needs more studies to know the biodiversity of fish, likewise, the information presented constitutes a contribution to the knowledge of fish diversity that would support environmental management actions and decision-making aimed at conserving one of the most diverse departments of Peru.
Specimens historically identified as Odontostilbe microcephala from the upper rio Paraná and Andean piedmont tributaries of the río Paraguay are reviewed and split in three species. We found that the distribution of O. microcephala is restricted to the Andean slope of the río Paraguay basin. The species is distinguished from congeners with subterminal mouth by the elongate body, usually 10-12 gill rakers on upper branch and smaller horizontal orbital diameter (24.6-32.8 % HL, mean 28.7%). Specimens from upper rio Paraná constitute two new species, diagnosed from other Cheirodontinae by the presence of mesopterygoid teeth, grouped on median portion and forming a continuous row. The new species are distinguished from each other by having premaxillary teeth with five cusps vs. nine cusps and by the number of lamellae in left and right sides of central median raphe of olfactory rosette with 20-21 vs. 11-12.Keywords: Biodiversity, Characidae, La Plata River basin, Mesopterygoid teeth, Taxonomy.Espécimes historicamente identificados com Odontostilbe microcephala do rio Paraná e tributários do río Paraguay, foram revisados e separados em três espécies. En este trabajo se presenta una lista actualizada de los registros de especies de peces de la cuenca del río Ucayali, Perú, provenientes de datos publicados y no publicados. Los resultados muestran que la cuenca del Ucayali presenta una ictiofauna rica y diversificada con el registro de 734 especies distribuidas en 15 órdenes, 49 familias y 292 géneros. La Ictiofauna está compuesta por peces miniatura (4%), peces pequeños (39%), medianos (41%), grandes (13%) y gigantes (3%). Los grupos dominantes son los Characiformes (312 especies, 43.0 %), Siluriformes (270 especies, 36.8%), Gymnotiformes (51 especies, 6.9%), y Cichliformes (50 especies, 6.8%). Parte de la ictiofauna es compartida con cuencas adyacentes como Marañón, y Amazonas peruano, principalmente en la región de confluencia, lo que contribuye a la notable diversidad de peces en la cuenca. Se observó una alta riqueza de especies con distribución restricta de los géneros Orestias, Astroblepus, Trichomycterus, Hemibrycon, entre otras especies, que ocurren en la región de cabeceras. Estimativos de riqueza de especies considerando su distribución por cada 100 m de altitud, indican que la cuenca del Ucayali esta subestimada, esperándose encontrar hasta 1125 especies. Los resultados aquí presentados son antecedentes que coadyuvaran a la toma de decisiones con fines de conservación y desarrollo sustentable en la región amazónica.
A new species of Bryconops is described from upper rio Juruena drainage, rio Tapajós basin, Amazon basin, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The new species is hypothesized as belonging to the subgenus Creatochanes by presenting the posterior extension of maxilla reaching to the junction of second and third infraorbital bones, and the ventroposterior margin of second infraorbital forming a complete border with third infraorbital, resulting in the lack of a naked area between them. The new species is easily distinguished from other species of the subgenus Creatochanes by the color pattern of the caudal fin, which consists of the dorsal lobe conspicuously dark pigmented on its distal half and the ventral lobe dark gray pigmented along its ventral portion below the horizontal through the ventral margin of the caudal peduncle.
