The developmental stages of the sea louse Lepeophtheirus elegans (Copepoda: Caligidae) are described from material collected from marine ranched Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. In L. elegans, setal number on the proximal segment of the antennule increases from 3 in the copepodid to 27 in the adult. Using the number of setae as a stage marker supports the inference that the post-naupliar phase of the life cycle comprises six stages: copepodid, chalimus I, chalimus II, pre-adult I, pre-adult II, and the adult. We observed variation in body length in both of the chalimus stages which we consider represents an early expression of sexual size dimorphism. We interpret the larger specimens of chalimus I as putative females, and the smaller as putative males; similarly with chalimus II, larger specimens are putative females and the smaller are males. Two patterns of life cycle are currently recognized within the Caligidae but the evidence presented here reconciles the two. We conclude that the typical caligid life cycle comprises only eight stages: two naupliar, one copepodid, and four chalimus stages preceding the adult in Caligus, but with the four chalimus stages represented by two chalimus and two pre-adult stages in Lepeophtheirus. This is a profound change with significant implications for the aquaculture industry, given that lice monitoring protocols include counts of chalimus stages and use temperature to predict when they will moult into the more pathogenic, mobile pre-adults. Lice management strategies must be tailored to the precise life cycle of the parasite.

The influence of tilt angle on the acoustic target strength of the Japanese common squid (Todarodes pacificus). e ICES Journal of Marine Science, 62: 779e789.To measure the influence of changes in tilt angle on the acoustic target strength (TS) of the Japanese common squid (Todarodes pacificus), we conducted a series of experiments to estimate TS in relation to tilt angle and swimming angle. Swimming angle was measured in a seawater tank using two infrared, underwater cameras under dark conditions. Ex situ measurements of TS in relation to tilt angle on live specimens using a fishhook and cage method were then conducted at 38 and 120 kHz; mantle length (ML) ranged from 21 to 27 cm (mean 24.75 cm). For the more precise TS measurement with tilt angle, another set of ex situ TS measurements relative to tilt angle was made at 38 and 120 kHz on tethered, anesthetized specimens in seawater. The mean swimming angle was ÿ17.7( (G12.7( s.d.). The mean TS varied from ÿ48.6 to ÿ44.6 dB and was relatively higher at 120 kHz than at 38 kHz, in the order of 0.7 and 2.5 dB. The empirical relationship between TS (dB) and ML (cm) is given by TS Z 20 log 10 (ML) ÿ 75.4 (r Z 0.81) at 38 kHz or TS Z 20 log 10 (ML) ÿ 73.5 (r Z 0.64) at 120 kHz. Based on the tethered method for the anesthetized squid, the mean standardized TS values (b 20 ) were found to be highly correlated with the tilt angle, and the resultant fitted equations for b 20 were expressed as: b 20 Z ÿ73.3 C 0.48 ! q C 0.0122 ! q 2 C 0.00016 ! q 3 for 38 kHz and b 20 Z ÿ72.6 C 0.53 ! q C 0.0134 ! q 2 C 0.00014 ! q 3 for 120 kHz, where q is the negative tilt angle in degrees. The mean TS based on the measurements using live squid was higher than that of tethered measurements, i.e., 2.6 dB at 38 kHz and 4.0 dB at 120 kHz. The higher mean TS in the ex situ measurements for the live squid can be explained by the influence of the low tilt angle on the overall TS data. The results can be used to understand the influence of tilt angle on the TS of Todarodes pacificus and thus improve the accuracy of biomass estimates.

Redescriptions of two pennellid copepods, Peniculus minuticaudae Shiino, 1956 and Peniculus truncatus Shiino, 1956, are provided, based on postmetamorphic adult females collected from marine ranched fishes captured at Tongyeong marine living resources research & conservation center, Korea. Peniculus minuticaudae was collected from the soft fin rays of black scraper Thamnaconus modestus. It can be distinguished from the other two closely related congeners Peniculus ostraciontis Yamaguti, 1939 and Peniculus truncatus by having a well developed triangular-shaped abdomen; the abdomen is rudimentary in other two species. This is thefirst report of the occurrence of Peniculus minuticaudae in Korea. Peniculus truncatus was collected from the dorsal fin of Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegelii. It can be distinguished from Peniculus minuticaudae by the combination of a rudimentary abdomen, long neck and setae on leg 1 and from Peniculus ostraciontis by the long neck, slender trunk, and setae on leg 1. It is also shown that Peniculus truncatus captured from the same host in Korea was misidentified as Peniculus ostraciontis and hence, this is thesecond record of the occurrence of Peniculus truncatus in Korea. A key is provided for the 14 nominal species of Peniculus.

Fat greenling (Hexagrammos otakii) is an important commercial fish in the Northwestern Pacific, being distributed along the coastal waters of the East/Japan Sea and the Yellow Sea. To investigate population genetic structure and demographic history of this species, one hundred and fifty five individuals were collected from five localities in the distribution range of the species and sequence variations in the mitochondrial genes COI, COIII-ND3-ND4L, and cytochrome b were examined. For all the genes in every sampling location, the nucleotide diversities were very low (0.001 ~ 0.005) although the haplotype diversities were relatively high, 0.55 ~ 0.81 for COI, 0.79 ~ 0.84 for COIII-ND3-ND4L, and 0.95 ~ 0.97 for cytochrome b. Hierarchical analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), the conventional population statistic FST, and exact test of population differentiation revealed no significant genetic structuring among the samples, indicating that fat greening is panmictic throughout the range of its distribution. Neutrality tests such as Tajima's D and Fu's FS statistics and mismatch distribution analyses suggested that fat greening has undergone the demographic history of population expansion during the late Pleistocene period approximately 91,000 ~ 327,000 years ago. The star-burst patterns of haplotype networks and low nucleotide diversities also indicated recent population expansion. These results help establish the fisheries management strategy for fat greenling in the Northwestern Pacific.

Ex situ target-strength measurements of Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) in the coastal Northwest Pacific. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 1219–1224. The Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) is an important species in regard to the fisheries and ecology of the coastal Northwest Pacific. Measurements of ex situ target strength (TS; dB re 1 m2) were made on live anchovy using 38, 120, and 200 kHz split-beam echosounders. The fish were tethered using small hooks attached to their mouths. During the acoustic measurements, an underwater video camera was used to continuously monitor fish behaviour and tilt-angle (θ). Data for 35 individual anchovy ranging from immature to adult sizes (total lengths LT = 4.8–12.2 cm) were analysed. Least-squares regression fits of TS vs. log(LT) were: TS38 kHz = 20 log(LT) − 65.8 (r2 = 0.82), TS120 kHz = 20 log(LT) − 68.4 (r2 = 0.84), and TS200 kHz = 20 log(LT) − 69.1 (r2 = 0.71). The LT vs. wet weight (W; g) relationship for these fish was W = 0.0036 LT3.204. The mean θ for anchovy swimming freely in a large seawater tank was 9.1° (s.d. = 13.1°). These ex situ measurements of TS, LT, W, and θ can be applied to improve acoustic estimates of Japanese anchovy biomass.
