Alcohol abuse in older adulthood is a rapidly growing but o$en hidden problem. The authors provide an overview of the issues related to older adult alcohol abuse through a discussion of physiological, psychological, and social risk factors; an examination of appropriate assessment procedures; and an overview offactors related to treatment.
This study explored homophobic attitudes of baccalaureate-level social work students at a rural southern university. Students (N=151) were asked to complete an assessment that included the Hudson & Ricketts (1980) Index of Homophobia scale and an original sociodemographic questionnaire. Results suggest that the majority of students were homophobic (84%). Implications of this research and effective teaching strategies to combat homophobic attitudes are discussed.
Individuals and their communities experience trauma and loss during times of natural disaster. Using Hurricane Katrina as a context, the authors provide an overview of the phases of disaster coping and discuss the ambiguous losses that can occur during these traumatic and life-changing times. The use of rituals as a creative intervention is introduced to help individuals and families facilitate their grief processes.
This inquiry explored quantitative and qualitative items in relation to Web-based instruction for undergraduate courses in social work. A questionnaire including demographics items, 5-point Likert scale items, and open-ended questions was used to explore and describe students' comfort level in taking the Web-based courses, perceptions of best forums for learning in the Web-based courses, and students' developmental learning level.
