This study investigated the control of foliar fungal diseases and growth promotion of Camellia oleifera seedlings in coastal reclaimed land through the use of Bacillus licheniformis MH48. B. licheniformis MH48 can produce lytic enzymes chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase that can inhibit foliar pathogens by 37.4 to 50.5%. Nevertheless, foliar diseases appeared in the seedlings with bacterial inoculation, and their survival rate decreased because they were unable to withstand salt stress. However, B. licheniformis MH48 significantly increased the total nitrogen and phosphorus contents in the soils through fixing atmospheric nitrogen and solubilizing phosphorus. The growth of seedlings with bacterial inoculation increased, particularly in root dry weight, by 7.42 g plant−1, which was 1.7-fold greater than that of the control. B. licheniformis MH48 produces the phytohormone auxin, which potentially stimulates seedling root growth. C. oleifera seedlings significantly increased in total nitrogen content to 317.57 mg plant−1 and total phosphorus content to 46.86 mg plant−1. Our results revealed the effectiveness of B. licheniformis MH48 not only in the control of foliar fungal diseases but also in the growth promotion of C. oleifera seedlings in coastal lands.

This study investigated the control of Fusarium root rot and development of coastal pine (Pinus thunbergii) seedlings in a container nursery by using Bacillus licheniformis MH48. High-quality seedlings without infectious diseases cause vigorous growth. Fusarium root rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum is responsible for serious damage to coastal pine seedlings in nurseries. B. licheniformis MH48 produced enzymes that degraded the fungal cell walls, such as chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase. These lytic enzymes exhibited destructive activity toward F. oxysporum hyphae, which were found to play key roles in the suppression of root rot. In addition, B. licheniformis MH48 increased the nitrogen and phosphorus in soils via fixed atmospheric nitrogen and solubilized inorganic phosphate. B. licheniformis MH48 produced the phytohormone auxin, which stimulated seedling root development, resulting in increased nutrient uptake in seedlings. Both the bacterial inoculation and the chemical fertilizer treatments significantly increased seedling growth and biomass, and the bacterial inoculation had a greater effect on seedling development. Based on the results from this study, B. licheniformis MH48 showed potential as a biological agent against Fusarium root rot and as a promoter of growth and development of Pinus thunbergii seedlings.

The objective of this study is to investigate the inhibitory effects of Lysobacter antibioticus HS124 on fungal phytopathogens causing gray mold rot, stem rot, and anthracnose. Another objective of this study is to promote the yield of fruit in jujube farms. L. antibioticus HS124 produces chitinase, a lytic enzyme with the potential to reduce mycelial growth of fungal phytopathogens involving hyphal alterations with swelling and bulbous structures, by 20.6 to 27.3%. Inoculation with L. antibioticus HS124 decreased the appearance of fungal diseases in jujube farms and increased the fruit yield by decreasing fruit wilting and dropping. In addition, L. antibioticus HS124 produced the phytohormone auxin to promote vegetative growth, thereby increasing the fruit size. The yield of jujube fruits after L. antibioticus HS124 inoculation was increased by 6284.67 g/branch, which was 2.9-fold higher than that of the control. Auxin also stimulated fine root development and nutrient uptake in jujube trees. The concentrations of minerals, such as K, Ca, Mg, and P in jujube fruits after L. antibioticus HS124 inoculation were significantly increased (1.4- to 2.0-fold greater than the concentrations in the control). These results revealed that L. antibioticus HS124 could not only control fungal diseases but also promote fruit yield in jujube farms.

There is a growing interest in using biocontrol agents to control fungal diseases and increase the production of jujube fruit (Zizyphus jujua Miller var. inermis Rehder). The purpose of this study was to use Bacillus licheniformis PR2 to inhibit fungal diseases and promote fruit production in jujube orchards. B. licheniformis PR2 secreted 92.4 unit/mL of chitinase, which inhibited fungal phytopathogens through hyphal alterations with swelling and bulbous structures. B. licheniformis PR2 also inhibited mycelial growths of fruit fungal pathogens Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Phytophthora nicotianae by 81.3%, 60.1%, and 67.0%, respectively. B. licheniformis PR2 increased jujube fruit yield by 17.9 kg/tree by reducing rotting damage caused by fungal pathogens, with a yield 3.2 times higher than that achieved by the control without PR2 treatment. In addition, B. licheniformis PR2 produced auxin, which promoted cell division after flower fertilization, thus increasing fruit length and diameter by 1.2-fold compared to those of the control. These results confirmed that eco-friendly B. licheniformis PR2 could effectively control fungal diseases in jujube orchards and improve its fruit size and yield.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the estrus could be predicted based on the size change of the vulva of red fox (Vuples vulpes). In 20 females, the length and width of the vulva were measured by intervals of 2 to 5 days for 45 days until mating was confirmed, and the surface area was calculated from the length and width, and two of them were measured for sex hormones estradiol and progesterone. As the esults, the surface area of the vulva started to increase 6 days before mating and increased about twice on the day of mating. Estradiol and progesterone started to increase 10 days and 3.5 days before mating, and the maximum level has been reached 3.5 days before mating and on the day of mating, respectively. The results indicate that the change of the vulva size during the estrus reflected the change in sex hormones. Thus, change in vulva size can be used as a non-invasive method to predict estrus in female red fox.
