O conhecimento da profundidade de um corpo d'água é de extrema importância para o estudo e gestão dos recursos hídricos. No entanto, levantamentos batimétricos, com o uso de ecobatímetros, apesar de fornecerem elevada precisão, são demorados e de alto custo. Por outro lado, imagens orbitais podem oferecer mapas batimétricos a baixo custo cobrindo grandes áreas, inclusive de difícil acesso. O presente trabalho teve como principal objetivo veriï¬car a aplicabilidade de imagens RapidEye como alternativa para extração da batimetria de águas opticamente rasas. Para tal foi utilizado o índice NDWI em uma imagem do município de Viçosa-MG, contendo lagoas utilizadas como área de estudo, onde foi feita a comparação com um levantamento batimétrico tradicional. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a metodologia proposta, de custo relativamente baixo e reduzido tempo de execução, pode ser empregada para a elaboração preliminar de projetos na área de gestão de recursos hídricos. Porém, deve-se ressaltar que o NDWI ainda requer testes a serem realizados em locais com diferentes características da água.
