Cet article s’intéresse à la place des doctorants au sein d’un laboratoire dans le moment paroxystique d’un emménagement offrant la possibilité nouvelle de partager des espaces de sociabilité avec des membres statutaires. Écrit par des doctorantes en sociologie, cet article mobilise des focus groups ainsi qu’une enquête par questionnaire menée auprès de personnes en thèse afin d’analyser leur vécu de la proximité nouvelle avec les titulaires. Face à la promesse de « faire laboratoire », les doctorants sont confrontés à des violences symboliques quotidiennes qui y font obstacle. L’article expose l’exclusion des doctorants par les titulaires à travers la réaffirmation de hiérarchies dans les moments de sociabilité et l’attribution des espaces. Si ces violences vécues semblent socialisatrices et permettent aux doctorants de comprendre les rouages de l’institution, elles entraînent toutefois des difficultés d’ordre psychologique et professionnel.
