International audienceThis article sets out to describe and analyse an ongoing research project concerning a blended language learning programme for first-year Business English undergraduate students preparing a degree in Languages and International Trade at Nantes University, France (660 enrolled students). The paper investigates whether the blended language learning system results in measurable improvements in second language acquisition. It examines how task-based teaching and learning fit into the system and focusses on the impact of using a learning platform on task conception and organisation, and on learner motivation and involvement. Results concerning the evaluation of the system – language assessment, user satisfaction, effectiveness of the system through questionnaires, pre- and post-tests, drop-out rates etc. – are presented and discussed. They rather indicate that linguistic levels have improved for 35% of a sample of students participating in the blended learning programme, however further research needs to be undertaken to determine the specific causes of this improvement.

International audienceThis contribution seeks to better understand undergraduate students’ perceptions of and engagement in a virtual resource center for Business English and the links between the use of the center and English language learning. In order to assess student engagement in the virtual resource center, we have conducted a representative questionnaire study. The results show that there is a complex relationship between perceptions and actions and that even when students claim to perceive tools as relevant this does not necessarily lead to increased engagement. These results bring us back to the drawing board to discuss how we can encourage students to take the next step and spend more time using the resources available to them in order to increase their investment in individualized English language learning opportunities online.
