The following describes a number of technologies and exemplary service designs that foster better Internet finding tools in libraries and more cooperative and efficient effort in Internet resource collection building. Our library and partner institutions have been involved in this work for over a decade. The open source software and projects discussed represent appropriate technologies and sustainable strategies that will help Internet portals, digital libraries, virtual libraries and library catalogswith-portal-like-capabilities (IPDVLCs) to scale better and to anticipate and meet the needs of scholarly and educational users.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
