SUMMARY BackgroundThe onset of acid inhibition for proton pump inhibitors is slower than with H 2 RAs and generally considered to be at a steady-state after 5 days. Thus, little direct comparison data exists between H 2 RAs and proton pump inhibitors for gastric acid suppression on day 1 of therapy. Furthermore, the durability of their acid suppression has not been systematically compared. Aim MethodsThe study was a randomized, double-blind, three-dosing regimens, three-period crossover. Healthy adults with frequent heartburn ( ‡2 days/week) underwent 24-h gastric pH monitoring on days 0 (baseline), 1, 3, 7 and 14.Results Thirty-one subjects were included in the per-protocol analyses. On day 1, the mean percentage time pH > 4 (pH4%) was higher for Ome-Mg 20, 44.6%, than for Fam 10, 36.7% (P ¼ 0.032), and not different from Fam 20, 46.9% (P ¼ 0.541). The pH4% was higher for Ome-Mg 20 than either famotidine regimen on all subsequent monitoring days (P < 0.001). The 24-h area under the mean intragastric pH curve showed a similar pattern. Furthermore, after day 1, Ome-Mg 20 demonstrated an increasing and sustained effect in contrast to a decreasing effect for famotidine, consistent with H 2 RA tolerance. Conclusion

ObjectiveTo assess gingival recession (GR) in manual and power toothbrush users and evaluate the relationship between GR and gingival abrasion scores (GA).MethodsThis was an observational (cross-sectional), single-centre, examiner-blind study involving a single-brushing exercise, with 181 young adult participants: 90 manual brush users and 91 oscillating–rotating power brush users. Participants were assessed for GR and GA as primary response variables. Secondary response variables were the level of gingival inflammation, plaque score reduction and brushing duration. Pearson correlation was used to describe the relationship between number of recession sites and number of abrasions. Prebrushing (baseline) and post-brushing GA and plaque scores were assessed and differences analysed using paired tests. Two-sample t-test was used to analyse group differences; ancova was used for analyses of post-brushing changes with baseline as covariate.ResultsOverall, 97.8% of the study population had at least one site of ≥1 mm of gingival recession. For the manual group, this percentage was 98.9%, and for the power group, this percentage was 96.7% (P = 0.621). Post-brushing, the power group showed a significantly smaller GA increase than the manual group (P = 0.004); however, there was no significant correlation between number of recession sites and number of abrasions for either group (P ≥ 0.327).ConclusionsLittle gingival recession was observed in either toothbrush user group; the observed GR levels were comparable. Lower post-brushing gingival abrasion levels were seen in the power group. There was no correlation between gingival abrasion as a result of brushing and the observed gingival recession following use of either toothbrush.

BackgroundMany adolescents have poor plaque control and sub-optimal toothbrushing behavior. Therefore, we compared the efficacy of an interactive power toothbrush (IPT) to a manual toothbrush (MT) for reducing dental plaque and improving toothbrushing compliance.MethodsIn this randomized, parallel single-blind clinical study, adolescents brushed twice daily with either a MT (Oral-B® Indicator soft manual toothbrush) or an IPT (Oral-B® ProfessionalCare 6000 with Bluetooth). Subjects brushed for 2 min, plus an additional 10 s for each ‘Focus Care Area’. At screening and Week 2, afternoon pre-brushing plaque was assessed via the Turesky Modification of the Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (TMQHPI), and supervised brushing duration was measured.ResultsSixty subjects were randomized; 98% completed. At Week 2, the mean reduction in whole mouth plaque relative to baseline was 34% (p < 0.001) for the IPT versus 1.7% (p = 0.231) for the MT. For Focus Care Areas, the IPT yielded a 38.1% mean TMQHPI reduction (p < 0.001) versus 6.2% for the MT (p < 0.001). Mean brushing time versus baseline increased 34 s in the IPT group (p < 0.001) while remaining flat in the MT group (p = 1.0).ConclusionsOver 2 weeks, adolescents using an IPT experienced superior plaque reduction and increased overall brushing time versus those using a MT.Trial registrationThis trial was retrospectively registered (ISRCTN10112852) on the 18th, June 2018.

Purpose To compare a novel oscillating‐rotating (O‐R) electric rechargeable toothbrush with micro‐vibrations to a marketed premium sonic toothbrush for reduction of gingivitis and plaque in an 8‐week randomized controlled trial. Methods Adult subjects with evidence of gingivitis and plaque were randomized to use either the novel O‐R brush (Oral‐B iO) or the sonic brush with sodium fluoride dentifrice twice daily. Assessments at baseline and week 8 included the Rustogi Modification of the Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI), Modified Gingival Index (MGI), and Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI). Gingivitis status (‘healthy’/’not healthy’) was classified per the American Academy of Periodontology/European Federation of Periodontology criteria. Results Ninety subjects were randomized to treatment and completed the study. Subjects had a mean age of 49.2 years; 68 were females. At baseline, the mean number (standard deviation [SD]) of bleeding sites for all subjects was 32.8 (16.43). At week 8, the O‐R brush group had a higher percentage of ‘healthy’ gingiva subjects than the sonic brush group (84% vs. 53% P = 0.003). In the between‐group comparisons at week 8, the O‐R brush group showed statistically significantly greater reductions (P < 0.001) compared to the sonic group for MGI, GBI, and number of bleeding sites. The O‐R brush group also had statistically significantly greater plaque removal (P ≤ 0.011) than the sonic brush group for whole mouth plaque as well as plaque in the proximal regions and along the gingival margin. Conclusions The novel O‐R electric toothbrush with micro‐vibrations provided greater plaque and gingivitis reductions than the marketed premium sonic toothbrush over 8 weeks.

These trials demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of a novel 14-day regimen of Ome-Mg 20 in completely preventing heartburn for 24 h establishing it as an excellent self-care treatment for frequent heartburn and supporting the approval of Prilosec OTC.

Efficient plaque removal can be achieved after 1 min of brushing with CA. The amount of plaque removed did not differ significantly from that achieved with the ADA brush after 2 min of brushing. Greater whole mouth and gingival margin plaque removal scores were seen with the ADA brush after 5 min.
