90 students n-ith normal color vision reported color preferences for 10 3-in. x 5-in. Munsell papers with a Munsell value/chroma of 5 / 6 on white, gray, or black backgrounds with a 5-in. x 7-in. visual field exposed for 2-sec. intervals. Colors of short wave lengths tended to be preferred. Preferences for colors were less extreme when colors were viewed on a black background. Illumination intensity did not reliably affect color preferences. The importance of evaluating the extent of preference differences between colors adjacent in preference orders was discussed. Background brightness and illumination did not clearly resolve differences in preference orders found i n earlier studies, and the possible influence of ocher stimulus variables was discussed.
The Visual Detection Simulator (VDS) is comprised of three individual subsystems: a Link GAT-1 trainer, a projection system, and a PDP 8/e controller. These systems have been custom interfaced to permit the study of target acquisition in a simulated in-flight environment. The purpose of this report is to provide an operational and maintenance manual for the VDS system. FINDINGS Subsystems and their interrelationships are described, and operational procedures for the total system are provided. Computer programs for the simulator operation, data transfer, and maintenance checks are included. Slides are arra:nged and catalogued, and calibration, maintenance, and testing procedures are provided.
