Os levantamentos topográficos têm sido utilizados, por diversas áreas do conhecimento, para representar o relevo terrestre em escala de detalhe, através da geração de Modelos Digitais do Terreno (MDT). Os levantamentos topográficos no Brasil são normatizados por norma especíï¬ca, da Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). O objetivo deste artigo foi o de averiguar se as densidades mínimas de pontos estipuladas pela ABNT estão adequadas para a escala de levantamento desejada. Assim, foi efetuado um levantamento topográfico em uma área de cerca de 2 ha no município de Nova Prata do Iguaçu-PR contendo 605 pontos cotados e em função dele foram gerados três pares de MDT, sendo cada par constituído por modelos com mesmo n amostral, porém com diferentes arranjos amostrais. Os MDT gerados foram comparados (entre pares) e os resultados demonstraram que, para um terreno com aproximadamente 25% de declividade, a densidade mínima de pontos estabelecida pela ABNT está subdimensionada e que, mesmo modelos contendo 4 vezes a quantidade mínima de pontos estabelecida pela ABNT não se enquadrariam sequer na Classe C dos Padrões de Exatidão Cartográï¬ca (PEC).
