O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar, através de uma revisão de ensaios clínicos, a importância da assistência odontológica e dos cuidados com a saúde oral de pacientes em Unidades de Terapia Intensiva (UTIs), para o controle do biofilme oral e de infecções respiratórias. Realizou-se uma busca nas bases de dados MEDLINE/PubMed e LILACS, utilizando os descritores “Dental Care”, “Hospital Dental Staff”, “Intensive Care Unit”, “Dentist, incluindo apenas ensaios clínicos randomizados, publicados até julho de 2020, sem restrição de idioma e país de estudo. Os estudos selecionados foram submetidos à triagem inicial com base na leitura dos títulos, resumos e artigo completo, sendo excluídos os estudos em duplicata. Foram encontrados 43 artigos, desses, apenas 10 ensaios clínicos randomizados foram incluídos na presente revisão. Considerando os resultados encontrados na presente revisão, a saúde oral de pacientes em UTIs, quando negligenciada, pode representar uma importante fonte de disseminação de infecções respiratórias, o que evidencia a importância da assistência odontológica e dos cuidados orais em ambiente hospitalar, com o uso da clorexidina 0,12%, não associada a escovação dental, para o controle do biofilme oral e redução na incidência de infecções respiratórias.
O presente estudo objetivou buscar na literatura trabalhos relacionados às práticas de higiene bucal e os possíveis impactos nas condições de saúde geral do idoso dependente. Trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica integrativa. A pesquisa foi realizada nas bases de dados eletrônicas PubMed (MEDLINE), BBO, LILACS e SCIELO, no mês de abril de 2021, utilizando os descritores “Higiene Oral”; “Idoso Fragilizado”; “Saúde do Idoso” e “Assistência Odontológica para Idosos”. Foram incluídos artigos científicos em português e inglês, publicados nos últimos cinco anos (2016 a 2021). Foram encontrados 129 artigos, dos quais 26 foram excluídos por duplicidade. Assim, analisou-se os títulos e resumos de 103 artigos, selecionando 43 para leitura na íntegra. Destes, 15 foram selecionados e incluídos neste estudo por atenderem aos critérios de inclusão pré-estabelecidos. Entre os estudos selecionados, nota-se a predominância de estudos realizados no Brasil (11), do tipo transversal (12) e com abordagem de fatores relacionados à prótese dentária (4) e qualidade de vida (3). Diante dos resultados discutidos, é evidente que existe uma lacuna quanto à atenção odontológica para idosos institucionalizados ou não, sendo a mesma agravada por condições socioeconômicas. Além disso, percebe-se a necessidade de políticas públicas para assistência integral da população idosa dependente.
A infecção pelo vírus do herpes simples tipo 1 (HSV-1) é considerada comum em todo o mundo e clinicamente manifesta sinais e sintomas na região oral. A história natural da doença compreende as fases de infecção primária, latência e infecção recorrente. O herpes labial é a manifestação clínica da infecção recorrente, caracterizada por pequenas e numerosas pápulas eritematosas e dolorosas, que constituem conglomerados de vesículas que se rompem e formam crostas. Entre as alternativas terapêuticas, estão os antivirais, terapias naturais e a laserterapia de baixa potência (TFBM). O presente estudo objtiva avaliar a eficácia da TFBM no tratamento de lesões de herpes labial, através de uma revisão integrativa da literatura. Foi realizada uma busca por artigos nas bases de dados eletrônicas MEDLINE via PubMed, LILACS via BVS, Web of Science e Cochrane Library publicados entre 2011 e 2021 que abordassem estudos de herpes labial com ensaios clínicos randomizados associando os descritores: “Low-intensity light therapy” OR “Photobiomodulation” OR “Laser” OR “Herpes Labialis”, sem restrição de idioma. Foram encontrados 60 estudos, dos quais, após a exclusão dos duplicados e dos que não atendiam aos critérios de inclusão, 5 foram selecionados para análise. Assim, a presente revisão destaca que a TFBM é um recurso terapêutico eficaz, reduzindo o tempo de cicatrização, a sintomatologia e a recorrência das lesões.
O objetivo deste estudo foi relacionar a distribuição dos cursos de Odontologia, número de cirurgiões-dentistas (CD) e PIB per capita em municípios paraibanos com cursos de graduação em Odontologia. Trata-se de um estudo transversal descritivo com utilização de dados coletados diretamente dos sites do Conselho Federal de Odontologia, do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística e do Cadastro Nacional de Cursos e Instituições de Ensino Superior. Todos os dados utilizados nesta pesquisa são de acesso público. A Paraíba possui 16 cursos de graduação em Odontologia, distribuídos em 6 munícipios: Araruna (1; 6,25%), Cabedelo (1; 6,25%), Cajazeiras (2; 12,50%), Campina Grande (6; 37,50%), João Pessoa (4; 25,00%) e Patos (2; 12,50%). Os municípios com maiores valores de PIB per capita, como João Pessoa (R$24.319,82) e Campina Grande (R$21.077,30), apresentaram também maior número de CD, com uma correlação positiva entre os valores do PIB per capita de cada município e a quantidade de cursos e profissionais. Apesar disso, Cabedelo, município paraibano com apenas um curso de Odontologia, sendo este na rede privada, e 126 CDs em atividade, tem o maior PIB per capita do estado (R$ 42.556,16). O PIB per capita parece ser responsável pela distribuição de CDs nos municípios com cursos de graduação em Odontologia, no entanto, fatores como qualidade de vida, mercado de trabalho e saúde, tendem a exercer forte influência na distribuição destes profissionais.
A terapia com uso do laser de baixa intensidade é uma técnica utilizada na Odontologia para o tratamento complementar de enfermidades que acometem os tecidos orofaciais. No tratamento das Desordens Temporomandibulares (DTMs), a Laserterapia promove o alívio da dor, diminui a inflamação, acelera o reparo tecidual, e consequentemente, melhora a qualidade de vida do paciente. O objetivo deste estudo é compreender, através de um relato de experiência, as expectativas, bem como o conhecimento adquirido por uma extensionista do curso de graduação em Odontologia, sobre a Laserterapia como adjuvante no tratamento da DTM. A partir do relato da discente, foi possível delinear as suas expectativas e vivências diante de uma nova terapia. Dessa forma, pode-se observar a importância da ação extensionista em garantir aos discentes o contato com a Laserterapia e proporcionar o desenvolvimento de habilidades, segurança na prática clínica e percepção da realidade do paciente.
