We conclude that the FPC and BLS are simple and effective for the treatment of anterior open bite, with the advantage given to the FPC.

Aim: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the oral hygiene habits, oral health conditions, and the perception about the influence of oral health conditions on the physical performance of youth and professional volleyball and soccer athletes. Methods: A total of 96 male athletes participated: 48 volleyball players (25 youth and 23 professional players); and 48 soccer players, of whom 22 were youth, and 26 were professional players. We analyzed the oral hygiene and oral health condition (daily toothbrush, flossing, mouthwash, dental plaque, orthodontic treatment, dental/facial trauma, temporomandibular dysfunction, malocclusion, and the athletes’ perception about the influence of oral health conditions on the physical performance (yes or no)). Comparisons were made between the youth and professional athletes for each sport (volleyball and soccer). According to each variable, we applied the Chi-square, Fisher’s Exact, and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: For soccer athletes, we found significant differences between youth and professionals for: flossing (p=0.014), orthodontic treatment (p=0.028), dental/facial trauma (p=0.041), and the athletes’ perception about oral health and physical performance (p<0.001). Considering the category (youth and professional) regardless of the type of sport, we found significant differences for dental plaque (p=0.024) and dental/facial trauma (p=0.005). According to the sport (volleyball and soccer), independent of the category, we found significant differences for daily brushing, dental/facial trauma (p=0.005), and the athletes’ perception about oral health and physical performance (p=0.006). Conclusion: We concluded that the surveyed athletes had good oral health and believed that oral health can influence sports performance.

Resumo O artigo tem por objetivo monitorar a produção ambulatorial em Odontologia e avaliar a associação de indicadores de ação coletiva e exodontia com o número de Equipes de Saúde Bucal (ESB) entre 2006 e 2015, no Paraná. Neste estudo ecológico longitudinal foram analisados dados secundários consolidados (ações coletivas de escovação supervisionada-ES, aplicação tópica de flúor-ATF, bochecho fluorado-BF, exame bucal com finalidade epidemiológica-EB e exodontia de dente permanente-EXO) do Sistema de Informação Ambulatorial e números de ESB no Sistema de Cadastro Nacional de Estabelecimentos de Saúde. Foram realizadas análises descritivas e correlação de Pearson, com nível de significância de p<0,05. Verificou-se um aumento de ESB implantadas ao longo do tempo e correlação forte positiva com procedimentos coletivos de ES (r=0,78; p=0,007) e BF (r=0,76; p=0,011) e correlação moderada negativa com EXO (r=-0,53). Conclui-se que os indicadores avaliados demonstraram que a implantação de Equipes de Saúde Bucal pode ter contribuído para mudanças no modelo de atenção, com aumento dos procedimentos coletivos preventivos e redução de perdas dentárias no Paraná.

<p>A reabilitação oral em pacientes edêntulos é um desafio que a odontologia atual vem tentando superar através de implantes osseointregrados. O fator socioeconômico ainda é uma das causas de maior dificuldade para o tratamento em pacientes edêntulos. No presente relato de caso descreveremos a associação entre projeto de extensão e atendimentos multidisciplinares para a reabilitação de um paciente com baixa condição financeira. Este trabalho relata o caso de um paciente de 55 anos que se queixava de sensibilidade em alguns dentes, desconforto com a prótese removível inferior, dificuldades mastigatórias e fonéticas, assim como, estética insatisfatória. Após avaliação de uma equipe multidisciplinar e posterior discussão com o paciente sobre os possíveis planos de tratamento, realizou-se a exodontia dos dentes inferiores e colocação de cinco implantes. Para reabilitação protética realizou-se a confecção do protocolo Bränemark na arcada inferior que possuía pouco rebordo ósseo e de uma nova prótese total superior. Ao final do tratamento foi evidente a melhora estética e funcional obtida com o tratamento, sendo que o paciente recuperou a autoestima e a vontade de cuidar de sua saúde bucal.  A partir desse relato de caso pode-se observar que o protoloco Bränemark é uma indicação viável no tratamento de pacientes edêntulos e com pouco rebordo alveolar por conferir estabilidade a prótese.</p>

Objectives: Oral health can affect athlete’s training routine negatively impacting their performance. Therefore, the objective of this review was to evaluate the influence of oral health on the physical condition of athletes. Design: Systematic review. Methods: A systematic search of multiple databases was conducted to identify studies that reported the association between oral health and the physical performance of athletes. The inclusion criteria were observational studies that evaluated the impact of oral health on the physical performance of athletes in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Results: Twelve papers were included and the majority of the relevant papers evaluated the influence of oral health conditions on physical performance, using self-assessment type questionnaires, in which their methodology was heterogeneous. The association between oral health and physical performance varied from 7% to 88%. Conclusion: We observed an association between oral health in physical performance of athletes, however, there is still insufficient evidence to quantify this influence.Keywords: oral health, athletic performance, athletes, observational study.
