Los sistemas de almacenamiento y distribución de agua potable constituyen un ambiente propicio para el desarrollo bacteriano; el flujo de agua favorece el transporte de nutrientes y bacterias, mientras que las paredes de las tuberías y las partículas presentes en el agua pueden servir de superficie de crecimiento para las bacterias. En este artículo se realiza una revisión de los diferentes métodos propuestos para evaluar el contenido de materia orgánica de un agua, como factor limitante del crecimiento bacteriano en las redes de abastecimiento. Se describe el fundamento de los métodos analíticos, el proceso de formación y desarrollo de la biopelícula en los sistemas de abastecimiento, el efecto de los desinfectantes sobre el crecimiento microbiano y la influencia de los materiales de las tuberías sobre el desarrollo de la biopelícula.
