This article deals with a very particular trajectory that some forms of Brazilian music have taken. The focus lies on the Atlantic flows that allowed for the arrival of music and musicians from Brazil to the archipelago of Cape Verde, deeply influencing musical productions in these islands. This work is an analysis of the discourses articulated by Cape Verdeans, in various historical contexts, about the role that “Brazilian music” (as they perceive it) plays on their own musical productions. To fulfill this purpose, I examine narratives that take music as an object of reflection (poems, articles, biographies) and the lyrics of Cape Verdean songs that mention the relationship between Cape Verde and Brazil.
In 2020, the South African government adopted a controversial measure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a nationwide ban on the sale and transport of alcoholic drinks. In this article, we explore the process that led to the construction of alcohol consumption as a “public problem” in the country, highlighting connections between alcohol drinking, politics, the economy, public health, public safety, and social inequality. We observe how the 2020 alcohol ban was decided upon, justified and enforced, following a long history of government attempts to control alcohol consumption among poor non-White South Africans. Based on ethnographic data, we present some patterns and meanings of alcohol consumption in popular settings and provide a glimpse into the drinking practices of more affluent South Africans during the alcohol ban. In doing so, we intend to offer a broader portrait of the phenomenon, one that helps grasp this intricate issue.
Cape Verdean musical genres, especially the morna, cannot be understood with exclusive reference to the Portuguese and African peoples who settled in this archipelago. These two cultural heritages were interwoven with other heterogeneous elements, building a much more complex music scene. The focus of this work lies on the Atlantic flows that allowed for the arrival of music and musicians from Brazil in Cape Verde. It is an analysis of the discourses elaborated by Cape Verdeans about the role that Brazilian music (as they perceive it) plays in their own musical productions.
