A maioria das Angiospermas necessitam do processo de polinização para desenvolver frutos e sementes. As principais polinizadoras e mais eficientes são as abelhas, porém essas estão sofrendo um declínio populacional cada vez maior, devido a vários fatores e causando inúmeras consequências. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste artigo é expor as causas e consequências do desaparecimento das abelhas e apresentar alternativas visando solucionar esse problema. A partir das informações obtidas e analisadas na presente revisão, foi possível constatar que os desmatamentos, as queimadas, a urbanização, o manejo inadequado, as variações climáticas, os agentes patogênicos, as ondas magnéticas, as monoculturas e os agrotóxicos são relevantes como agentes causais no processo de desaparecimento das abelhas, levando a uma série de consequências, incluindo destruição do habitat, falta de recursos florais, estresse das abelhas, doenças (Varroatose, Nosemose e CCD), comprometendo na fisiologia, no comportamento e na estrutura social das abelhas. Na tentativa de minimizar ou evitar esse problema, foram propostas soluções alternativas, através da adoção de medidas como modificação e redução do uso dos agrotóxicos, conservação do habitat mantendo a agrobiodiversidade, manejo adequado das colmeias e uso sustentável das colônias, aprimoramento do conhecimento dos polinizadores para o seu uso adequado, educação ambiental com a população de apicultores, meleiros e agricultores, e a possibilidade de introdução de espécies exóticas com ampla distribuição geográfica e generalista, podendo vir a constituírem importantes estratégias visando aplicação futura.
