El artículo hace referencia al crecimiento económico del sistema insular provocado por la transformación del paisaje para beneficio de la actividad turística, mediante la comercialización de productos y servicios a escala global, en el marco del nuevo colonialismo. El artículo es el resultado de una investigación vinculada al análisis de las alteraciones en la costa occidental de la isla de Cozumel, provocadas por el impulso al turismo de cruceros. Lo anterior permite revelar el proceso de homogenización del espacio turístico insular con impactos en el espacio a raíz de los cambios en el modo de producción y la dependencia económica de la zona. The article is the result of an investigation related to the analysis of alterations in the west coast of the island of Cozumel, caused by the impulse of cruise tourism. This can reveal the process of homogenization of insular space tourism impacts in space as a result of changes in the mode of production and the economic dependence of the area.
RESUMENLos impulsores de la política neoliberal han provocado dos grandes problemas en la era moderna: la formación de oligopolios y pobreza. Con el afán de resarcir esta condición, se crea e implementa la Agenda 21; el turismo, no escapa a las pretensiones orientadas a instituir a los países en subdesarrollo entorno a la protección de los recursos naturales y culturales, con la finalidad de preservarlos para sus generaciones futuras. La Isla de Cozumel es un importante centro turístico en el Caribe Mexicano, y la Agenda 21 para el Turismo Mexicano y su implementación en la ínsula, el tema que permite realizar algunas reflexiones en torno a su inserción al desarrollo sustentable y las acciones que ha efectuado a fin de estructurar la Agenda 21.
El perfil del turista internacional de Cozumel a partir de la construcción de su capital simbólico IntroducciónCozumel es una isla localizada en el Caribe en la que se desarrolla el turismo co mo actividad económica básica, a partir de los atractivos culturales y natura les con los que cuenta; entre los primeros están la fiesta del Carnaval, la fies ta de El Cedral o de la Santa Cruz, la fiesta de San Miguel -que se conmemora en ho nor del santo patrono del pueblo-y la fiesta del Día de Muertos; mientras que entre los segundos se encuentran, por ejemplo, los arrecifes coralinos, que la convierten en uno de los sitios de buceo de mayor renombre en el mundo. Es tos atractivos motivan a diferentes tipos de turistas en grandes y pequeños gru pos, quienes llegan a la isla por diversos medios: crucero, avión, ferry y trans bor da dor. Según los reportes provistos por la Secretaría de Turismo del Es ta do de Quintana Roo (Sedetur, 2009), en 2008 Cozumel recibió 924 451 tu ris tas, que produjeron una derrama económica de 497 354 638 dólares, a par tir de un gas to turístico promedio de 538 dólares americanos por turista. Es pertinen te re sal tar que la cifra no considera el gasto realizado por los ex cur sio nis tas de cru ce ros, quienes en forma masiva constituyen la mayor corriente turística de la isla (2 569 433 turistas) con un gasto de 82 dólares por persona. Para efec tos de esta investigación se estudiará únicamente al turista que pernocta en la isla. Para la satisfacción de estas corrientes turísticas existe una red de ser vi cios conformada por la zona hotelera norte, centro y sur. Cozumel cuen ta con 51 hoteles y 4 373 cuartos, respaldados por una infraestructura que, ade más de proveer servicios al poblado, apoya a restaurantes, bares, es pec tácu los, excursiones, transportación, telecomunicaciones, entre otros. La di ver si dad de grupos que constituyen el turismo que llega a Cozumel consume di fe ren tes productos y servicios dependiendo de sus gustos y necesidades, por lo que se establece que no existen grupos homogéneos de consumo, lo cual ge ne ra los cuestionamientos: ¿son las delimitantes económicas, cul tu ra les, so cia les, regionales, las que influyen en la compra del destino?, ¿de qué ma ne ra interviene el capital simbólico en la configuración del perfil del tu ris ta internacional en Cozumel?, y la necesidad de las empresas de servicios tu rís ti cos, gubernamentales, organizaciones no gubernamentales y de todas aque llas que interactúan con la corriente turística actual de estudiarla para saber qué ofrecerle.El propósito de la investigación es analizar el perfil del turista internacio nal que arriba a Cozumel, con la finalidad de proporcionar información referente
