Também conhecido como síndrome de Cushing, o hiperadrenocorticismo (HAC) é uma doença endócrina, que acomete principalmente cães de meia idade a idosos. Na maioria das vezes, se manifesta de forma silenciosa, passando despercebido pelos tutores, que demoram a procurar ajuda profissional do Médico Veterinário, que acaba por sua vez, dando um diagnóstico tardio. A doença se caracteriza pela produção excessiva do hormônio cortisol. A etiologia do HAC, nos permite classifica-lo como iatrogênico, sendo causado pelo uso indiscriminado de glicorticoides, ou espontâneo, podendo ser dependente da hipófise ou da adrenal, estes dois últimos, sendo causados por tumores, em suas respectivas glândulas. O animal acometido por essa doença, apresenta diversas alterações clínicas e laboratoriais, resultantes da produção excessiva de cortisol. A presente revisão de literatura ao abordar as principais informações sobre o HAC em cães, caracterizando a etiologia da doença, a epidemiologia, os principais sinais clínicos, os testes de diagnóstico, o prognóstico e a escolha do tratamento, tem como objetivo contribuir para condutas assertivas frente ao HAC, uma vez que a frequência da doença na rotina clínica é significativa e representa um desafio, para nós Médicos Veterinários.
