Os resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU) estão entre os mais importantes tipos de resíduos, em função do elevado volume produzido, principalmente nos grandes centros urbanos e dos impactos ambientais decorrentes da sua disposição final. O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar a gestão de resíduos sólidos urbanos no Estado do Rio de Janeiro através de dados obtidos de relatórios dos anos de 2010 a 2014 disponibilizados pela Secretaria de Estado do Ambiente (SEA) e do relatório síntese do Plano Estadual de Resíduos Sólidos do Rio de Janeiro (PERS) de 2013. Foi analisada a disposição final dos resíduos sólidos urbanos por município e por região do Estado e a reciclagem de resíduos sólidos domiciliares urbanos. Foi constatada a diminuição de vazadouros (lixões) e aterros controlados e o aumento da utilização de aterros sanitários pelos municípios, no período de 2010 a 2014. A região do estado que possui a maior porcentagem de municípios que utilizam os aterros sanitários como o destino prioritário de seu lixo é a Região Serrana. Segundo os relatórios, na Região Noroeste Fluminense todos os municípios depositam seus resíduos sólidos urbanos integralmente em vazadouros. Mais de 60 % dos municípios não encaminham o lixo domiciliar urbano para a reciclagem e a porcentagem do lixo reciclado é muito pequena na maioria dos municípios. A diminuição dos lixões municipais provavelmente ocorre em função da tentativa de adequação dos municípios à Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos (PNRS). Todavia, parte dos municípios ainda não conseguiu se adequar à legislação.
