As síndromes medulares podem ser divididas em: s índrome de transecção medular, s índrome de secção medular incompleta e s índrome da cauda equina. A s índrome de transecção medular, comumente causada por traumatismos da medula espinhal, manifesta-se com déficits sensitivos e motores completos abaixo do nível da lesão. A síndrome de secção medular incompleta, por sua vez, apresenta manifestações dependentes da região medular lesionada. São exemplos dessa síndrome: s índrome de Brown-Sé quard (hemissecção medular), s índrome medular anterolateral (comprometimento dos funículos anterior e lateral), s índrome cordonal posterior (comprometimento do funículo posterior), e s índrome medular central. Por fim, a s índrome da cauda equina, que consiste na lesão a partir da região terminal da medula espinhal e caracteriza-se principalmente por sintomas sensitivos na região lombar, períneo e membros inferiores.
A Síndrome Sensitiva do Nervo Periférico consiste em manifestações de doenças caracterizadas pelo acometimento do Sistema Nervoso Periférico (SNP). Dentre as principais etiologias dessa síndrome, podemos destacar a hanseníase, a diabetes mellitus e as compressões nervosas. Clinicamente, dividimos a Síndrome Sensitiva do Nervo Periférico em polineuropatias e mononeuropatias, e suas manifestações são dependentes do componente do SNP afetado, da etiologia e progressão do quadro.
