This paper summarizes the development of metrology for reflective LCDs from the late 1970s to our days, it introduces the two different approaches used in the LCD industry (directional and multi‐directional illumination) and explains the distinct differences in the results obtained with the two methods. The current status of the standardization of measuring methods for reflective LCDs by the WG2 of IEC TC110 is presented and an outlook is given of the work to be done before finalization of this standard, especially when the recently initiated horizontal harmonization activity of the IEC TC110 is supposed to be taken into account.
“Energy efficiency” and “Green Technology” are currently buzzwords in the display industry. Upcoming mandatory energy regulations are further driving this development, challenging the display industry. Within this context, we would like to demonstrate the advantage of UBplus LC technology for application in TVs. UBplus technology using LC mixtures with negative dielectric anisotropy offers a unique solution to this challenge due to a high transmittance level, whilst retaining the classic FFS cell layout. This paper summarizes the recent developments of liquid crystal mixtures for UBplus.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
