A migração é, basicamente, um ato de busca e de coragem: o migrante é quase sempre movido pela esperança de que, transpostos o medo, a insegurança e os riscos do momento de passagem, as recompensas demonstrem que a aventura valeu a pena. Sair da cidade natal, do convívio com pessoas e situações conhecidas e familiares é um desafio que só uma forte motivação pode inspirar. E é por isso que nem só os pobres migram. Nestes, é claro, as necessidades são mais prementes, a busca de uma realidade melhor é mais desesperada. Mas o desejo de vencer não é maior que o do jovem caipira de classe média que vem do interior almejando se igualar ao cosmopolita não somente em qualificação profissional e ilustração — já que as fontes importantes do saber estão nos grandes centros —, mas também no jeito de ser, descontraído, universal, não-provin- ciano. Não é de se estranhar que nas últimas décadas tenhamos vivido no Brasil uma verdadeira “revolução” social, com a vinda maciça da população rural para as grandes cidades: são milhões de carências e sonhos distintos que buscam materializar-se no “novo mundo”. Numa realidade de profundas transformações econômicas, como a brasileira a partir dos anos 50, a universalização dos meios de comunicação contribuiu para exacerbar os desejos individuais de mudança. E ao tornar mais homogêneos e conhecidos os padrões do que seja uma vida civilizada e confortável, a sociedade promoveu também uma corrida aos símbolos desse modo de vida. [...]
