Opuntia ficus-indica, Cactaceae presente no Brasil, possui diferentes atividades biológicas já descritas, entre elas o potencial antidiabético. A prospecção tecnológica trata-se da possibilidade da projeção de planos futuros envolvendo determinado assunto. Portanto, este trabalho apresenta a prospecção tecnológica dessa espécie em relação ao tratamento da diabetes. Para isso, uma busca por patentes foi feita nos bancos: Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial, Escritório de Patentes Europeu, Organização Mundial da Propriedade Intelectual, Escritório de Patentes e Marcas Registradas dos Estados Unidos, e pela Lens. Com isso, foi observado que a Coréia do Sul se destacou no número de patentes, enquanto o Brasil não apresentou depósito de patentes. Entretanto, a quantidade de trabalhos encontrados ainda é baixa se comparado com outras espécies. Então, é evidente que a Opuntia, pelo seu potencial farmacológico, deve ser alvo de novos estudos, e com essa prospecção pode-se incentivar o direcionamento correto dos esforços de investigações nessa temática.
