Objectives: To determine the prevalence of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) due to Chlamydia trachomatis in newborn infants and to describe the clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics of the disease. Methods:A cross-sectional study carried out over a 12-month period. All infants up to 6 months of age admitted consecutively at the Centro Pediátrico Professor Hosannah de Oliveira of the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil, and diagnosed with LRTI according to clinical and/or radiological criteria were included in the study. C. trachomatis infection was diagnosed by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of IgM-class antibodies. The prevalence of LRTI by C. trachomatis was determined and the prevalence ratios for the infection and clinical or laboratory variables were calculated. Results:One hundred and fifty-one infants were submitted to serology for C. trachomatis and 15 (9.9%) tested positive. Chlamydial infection was found only in infants under 5 months of age, mainly in those aged under 2 months. Three of the infants with C. trachomatis infection were born by cesarean section. Conjunctivitis and eosinophilia had occurred in 33.3% of the cases. Chest X rays were abnormal in 92.0% of cases. There was an association between C. trachomatis infection and the duration of hospitalization exceeding 15 days (p = 0.0398) and oxygen therapy (p = 0.0484). Conclusions:There was a high prevalence of C. trachomatis respiratory infection in the population studied. The infection was associated with a more severe form of the disease, emphasizing the importance of testing pregnant women for this infection to avoid infection in the newborn infant.
Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, which may affect several kinds of cells. Congenital toxoplasmosis is considered an important cause of child mortality and morbility worldwide. In this paper we have evaluated the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies anti-T. gondii during the pregnancy. From the 5.946 samples, 3.179 tested positive for IgG, 42 positive for IgM and 2.745 were seranegative. Most patients were tested after the third month of pregnancy.
Introduction: Toxoplasmosis is an asymptomatic disease that can lead to systemic disease in the fetus of pregnant women with primary infection. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of toxoplasmosis, associated factors, and correlation between the serology of pregnant women and their pets, in the municipality of Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 196 pregnant women and their cats or dogs (n=89). Semi-structured interviews were conducted and serum samples from the pregnant women were tested to detect IgM and IgG antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, and avidity tests were performed for IgM-positive samples. The serum collected from pets were tested for IgG antibodies, and IgM antibodies in cats. A non-conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to identify infection-associated factors. Results: IgG and IgM antibodies were detected in 67.9% (133/196) and 1.5% (3/196) samples, respectively, for women with an avidity of over 60%. Age ≥ 25 and the presence of cats in the vicinity were found to be associated with infection, while the level of education and previous orientation toward prevention of toxoplasmosis were protective factors in pregnant women. IgG antibodies were detected in 46.1% (41/89) of the animals, and cats were found to be negative for IgM. For the animals, age ≥ 1 year was a factor associated with infection. There was no correlation between serology of the pregnant women and the animals (p=0.15). Conclusions: An elevated prevalence of toxoplasmosis was detected in the region. Therefore, the adoption of preventive measures by public healthcare bodies is recommended.
To investigate the morphological and biochemical effects of lamivudine associated with ritonavir on maternal and fetal livers and kidneys throughout the pregnancy of albino rats. Materials and Methods: Forty pregnant rats were divided into four numerically equal groups: control (C), experiment 1 (E1), experiment 2 (E2), and experiment 3 (E3). Only distilled water was given to the control group, while groups E1, E2, and E3 received, respectively, 5, 15 and 45 mg/kg of lamivudine associated with 20, 60, and 180 mg/kg of ritonavir, per day, throughout the pregnancy. On the 20 th day of the pregnancy, the histological structure of the maternal and fetal livers and kidneys was analyzed by means of optical microscopy, along with the blood concentrations of AST, ALT, urea, and matrix creatinine. The numerical variables were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparison test. Results: The histological alterations occurred in both the maternal livers and the maternal kidneys, particularly in group E3, which received the greatest therapeutic dosage (nine times). The blood levels of ALT in group E3 were significantly lower than in the other groups (p = 0.0037). The urea and creatinine levels in the blood were significantly lower in group E1 (p = 0.0420 and p = 0.0108, respectively). Conclusions: The association of lamivudine and ritonavir affected the histological structure of the kidneys of the matrices of group E3. There was a significant decrease in the blood values of urea e creatinine in group E1.
