The major energy foods in Sonora, Mexico, are beans and com and flour tortillas. The daily intake of beans was 329 g, com tortillas, 253 g, and flour tortillas, 105 g. The chemical composition of the diet for low-income adults, 25 years or older, was analyzed according to AOAC (1990) methods for protein, fat, dietary fiber, phytates, Fe, Zn, Se, and Ca. The results of this study showed intakes of 92.98 g/day of fat, 104.33 g/day of protein, 49.24 g/day of dietary fiber, 2088 mg/day of phytates, 19.50 mg/day of Fe, 19.50 mg/day of Zn, 1164 mg/day of Ca, and 171.68 µ g/day of Se for a diet of 2667 keal. All of these levels exceed the U.S. RDAs and the recommendations for Mexico (NAS, 1989; INN, 1977). Comparing the analyzed values with calculated values from databases, the values for the macronutrients agreed more closely than did the values for micronutrients; however, databases that include regional foods must be used. Minerals and phytates, with the exception of Ca, are insoluble, which could indicate the presence of unavailable phytate-mineral complexes.

En este trabajo se analizaron los discursos normalizadores en torno al control del cuerpo femenino, y su apropiación en prácticas y modelos corporales de mujeres jóvenes de clases sociales distintas, en un contexto urbano del noroeste de México. Se utilizó una perspectiva socioantropológica de corte cualitativo, y se realizaron siete entrevistas grupales a mujeres de clase baja, media y alta. El discurso normalizador del cuerpo femenino alude tanto al cuidado de la salud y/o en contra de la obesidad, como a la estética. El cuerpo delgado, sano, en forma y bello se reconoce como el ideal; sin embargo, se valoran modelos corporales  diferenciados por clase social. Las prácticas se identifican bajo el discurso de la salud pero con una motivación estética. Se requiere mayor acercamiento a la experiencia corporal de las mujeres, en una región donde la delgadez es la norma social pero no siempre es compartida, y donde las prácticas corporales son cada vez más invasivas.

Introduction Waist circumference (WC) constitutes an indirect measurement of central obesity in children and adolescents. Objective To provide percentiles of WC for Hispanic‐American children and adolescents, and compare them with other international references. Materials and methods The sample comprised 13 289 healthy children between 6 and 18 years coming from public schools of middle and low socioeconomic levels in different parts of Argentina, Cuba, Spain, Mexico, and Venezuela. The LMS method to calculate WC percentiles was applied. Sex and age differences were assessed using Student's t test and ANOVA (SPSS v.21.0). Comparisons were established with references from the United States, Colombia, India, China, Australia, Kuwait, Germany, Tunisia, Greece, and Portugal. Results WC increases with age in both sexes. Boys show higher WC in P3, P50, and P97. Comparison of 50th and 90th percentiles among populations from diverse sociocultural and geographical contexts shows high variability, not all justified by the measurement method. Discussion and conclusions Specific WC percentiles for sex and age, and P90 cut‐off points are provided; these values are potentially useful to assess central obesity in Hispanic‐American adolescent children.
