La primera estrofa de la canso A chantar m’er de so q’ieu no volria de La Comtessa de Dia, único texto con partitura que se conserva del grupo de las trobairitz, se ha transmitido en el folio 204r-vᵒ del ms. W que analizamos como testimonio de la relación poesía/música junto al material iconográfico conservado de la misma -cinco miniaturas- que nos ofrecen los cuatro grandes cancioneros de la poesía trovadoresca del s. XIII (A, I, K y H).
A pesar de su importancia dentro de la primera generación de la poesía de cancionero, los llamados poëtae veteres, la crítica no se ha centrado suficientemente en la figura y la obra del Arcediano de Toro. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo general colmar esa laguna con el propósito de determinar tanto las deudas con la lírica gallego-portuguesa como las innovaciones propias de la nueva tradición de la poesía de cancionero. En primer lugar, se examinan los datos biográficos hasta ahora disponibles y se aportan algunos nuevos a fin de esbozar una biografía más detallada del autor. En segundo lugar, se analizan las seis composiciones de atribución segura desde el punto de vista métrico, retórico y temático. A continuación, se realiza una interpretación global de toda la producción poética del trovador, partiendo de la hipótesis de que la ordenación que presenta en el manuscrito invita a una lectura secuencial. Así, las composiciones que cierran el conjunto (PN1-314, ID0533, una cantiga de despedida; su correspondiente desfecha, PN1-315, ID1441; y PN1-316, ID1442, un testamento literario jocoso) ofrecen la contraparte de las cantigas de tema amoroso (PN1-311, ID1438; PN1-312, ID1439; y PN1-313, ID1440) caracterizadas por su temática convencional y por su compleja elaboración formal. El análisis sugiere que la innovación principal de la obra del Arcediano consiste en proponer una nueva experiencia poética que trasciende desde el punto de vista temático y formal el marco heredado del amor cortés en el contexto de las transformaciones de la poesía francesa y románica en general que estaban en marcha desde el siglo XIII.
