La desaparición del cierre de emisiones y el comienzo de la emisión continua constituyen una de las referencias clave para determinar la evolución de la radiodifusión en cada país. En el caso de España, el final del descanso nocturno no se estableció de forma generalizada hasta finales de los años 70, pero en las décadas anteriores, como en cualquier proceso, se sucedieron distintas iniciativas que pusieron las bases para la emisión veinticuatro horas. Concretamente, la primera de ellas tuvo lugar en 1965 y estuvo a cargo de Radio Nacional de España. Así, el presente estudio abunda sobre este y otros hitos, describiendo y analizando no solo la información existente sobre las programaciones de las emisoras durante los primeros cincuenta años de historia de la radio española, sino recogiendo las impresiones de algunos de los testigos que vivieron en primera persona la transformación de las parrillas.
