El presente artículo busca evidenciar la manera en que el “pesebre quiteño” de los siglos XVII y XVIII recompuso el discurso iconográfico de los belenes napolitanos, y dio vida a una retórica visual tendiente a transmitir modelos ideales vinculados a formas de comportamiento tanto individuales como sociales. A partir del análisis iconográfico de una serie de figuras de pesebre, sumadas a los registros documentales que describen uno de los pesebres utilizados en el marco de la evangelización desarrollada en el Nuevo Reino de Granada, se demostrará que la iconografía del pesebre colonial se presentó como un mecanismo de configuración social. En medio de esto, lo ideal se presenta como núcleo del discurso visual, que se estructura a partir de la presencia de rasgos y formas propias de la retórica iconográfica del barroco.
A lo largo del tiempo, la evangelización indígena ha estado asociada directamente a la imagen religiosa, lo que ha convertido al discurso visual en el puente para superar las barreras idiomáticas entre los doctrineros españoles y los naturales de las nuevas tierras. Con tal aserto como referencia, en el presenteartículo nos preguntamos por el discurso visual fijado en el ámbito doctrinal y su posible funcionalidad en el marco de la “catequesis” del indio. A partir de los inventarios de los templos de doctrina pertenecientes al partido de Tunja, realizados en el marco de la visita efectuada por Andrés Verdugo y Oquendo entre 1755 y 1756, el presente texto busca entonces reconstruir el horizonte iconográfico de la doctrina en la Nueva Granada del siglo XVIII. Con base en ello se determinará el papel que la devoción y el milagro tuvieron, no solo como ejes del discurso visual de la doctrina, sino como núcleo de la catequesis misma.

Tomando como punto de partida dos imágenes inmersas en el proceso de evangelización de dicho pueblo, la Virgen de Monguí y el Retrato ecuestre de Felipe V, se evidencian aquí las características de un discurso que, a lo largo de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII, se introdujo junto a la catequesis indiana con el fin de vincular a pueblos como Monguí dentro del amplio espectro de la Monarquía hispánica. Retórica e imagen se mezclan aquí bajo la premisa de suplantar la ontología indiana con una nueva realidad, en la que Dios y el rey eran centrales.
