The sustainability of guadua forests under management was assessed throughout the emergy analysis approach. The system analyzed correspond to guadua forest whose major product are culms for commercial purposes. In order to calculate the sustainability, available information on purchased inputs, renewable and nonrenewable natural resources as well as external factors, which can affect the system such as labor or inputs (ie. fuel consumption), was used for calculate indexes which describe relationship among the employed natural resources. The results showed the guadua forest system under management does not depend on external inputs and its sustainability is above 90%. In fact, the recovery ability after harvesting shown by these guadua forests is associated with a proper management, which contributes to the ecosystem conservation of functions. Considering the current management conditions, the guadua forest system is sustainable although highly dependent on natural resources. Under these conditions, the system become vulnerable since the management should be focused on guaranteeing the current conditions and therefore, their conservation. Keywords: Emergetic, farm, guadua forest system, management, renewable natural resources.
ABSTRACTBackground. Aquatic macroinvertebrates have been widely used as bioindicators of the response of aquatic ecosystems to human activities that affect them. Thus, their use as bioindicators is included in different protocols for the ecological assessment of streams. Goals. This study assessed the ensemble of aquatic macroinvertebrates in Dali Creek along with its ecological condition. Methods. Six surveys over seven reaches of the Creek were conducted from April 2012 through November 2013. The multihabitat method was used to collect the macroinvertebrates, and a visual assessment was used to study the state of the aquatic habitat and the riparian vegetation. Results. The results show that Aquatic macroinvertebrates are abundant and diverse, particularly at the reference points located upstream on the Dalí Creek and its tributary QR2. It was found significant differences between microhabitats sampled composition (K-W p<0.05). The BMWP index displayed a condition of high quality, with "very clean water to clean" condition. Similarly, the IHF index showed that all the sampling points present excellent condition except the QR3 point. Finally, the IMEERA index revealed that the ecological stat...

This article describes a case study of a process of technology transfer for the collection, transportation, treatment, and final disposal of domestic wastewater in the rural community of La Florida, located near Pereira, Colombia. An unconventional wastewater-treatment system, consisting of a gritremoval chamber, three septic tanks, three up-flow anaerobic filters, and seven subsurface-flow constructed wetlands, was selected, designed, built, and implemented with the active participation of the community and local institutions. In order to do this, the knowledge dialogue model (KD) was used. The KD model was developed by the Research and Development Institute in Water Supply, Environmental Sanitation, and Water Resources Conservation (Cinara) of the Universidad del Valle in Colombia. Despite the participatory approach and the application of integrated water-resource-management principles, the unwillingness of the community and the participating institutions to establish a long-term alliance once the infrastructure was built affected the system’s sustainability. For similar initiatives to be successful, an institutional framework oriented toward sustainability must be in place as well as the political willingness to endorse these endeavors.
