El artículo examina los retratos, correspondencia y propiedades personales de María Josefa de Velasco y María Margarita Carrión, con el propósito de establecer la configuración de la imagen pública y privada de las mujeres criollas mediante el uso de joyas y vestidos. A partir del estudio de la cultura material, se aborda el uso social de esos objetos y sus sentidos, mediante el examen de su precio, variedad, origen y circulación. El lapso de estudio se sitúa entre la inclusión de la Audiencia de Quito dentro del Virreinato de la Nueva Granada y el establecimiento de la primera junta autonómica, última etapa en que los objetos de uso respondieron a patrones coloniales de comportamiento social.
