Introducción: la hiposmia es un marcador temprano de algunas enfermedades neurodegenerativas. Las pruebas de identificación de olores son costosas y contienen olores poco conocidos en algunas culturas. Es importante estandarizar pruebas de fácil aplicación en países hispanohablantes. Material y métodos: estudio observacional descriptivo de identificación de los olores a café, clavos, canela y azúcar en 100 adultos sin enfermedades que afecten la olfacción. Se evaluaron los olores contenidos en empaques comerciales individuales y se registró la respuesta libre dada por cada sujeto. Resultados: el café y la canela fueron identificados por 83 y 71% de los sujetos, respectivamente. Los clavos y el azúcar fueron pobremente identificados. Por encima de los 60 años, menos de 2/3 de las personas reconocieron el café y la canela. Conclusiones: la mayoría de sujetos identifican dos de los cuatro olores contenidos en esta prueba y proponemos que sujetos con identificación de uno o ningún olor deberían someterse a una evaluación exhaustiva. El efecto de la edad, también descrito en otras publicaciones, sugiere que en sujetos de mayor edad sería necesario utilizar pruebas con más número de olores para diferenciar entre la pérdida de olfato asociada a la edad y la hiposmia asociada a enfermedad neurodegenerativa.
