AbstractA study was performed to find the factors that are associated with the academic performance of students of higher level education in the city of Rio Verde, in the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. 365 students were surveyed, most of them from socio-economic levels ranging from middle to lower class and considering the following factors: the Grade Point Average (GPA) obtained by the students in their previous high school studies, their socio-economic level, career counselling they have received, the educational level of their parents and variables related with the perspective students have about their future situation and the student’s gender. It was found that better grades have been obtained by female students, by those that expect to continue their studies at the post-graduate level, and by those who obtained better grades in high school. There was not a statistical association between undergraduate students’ grades and their career counselling, socio-economic status and educational level of their parents.

Abstract In our country, the system of higher education carries out extraordinary efforts through different planning processes in order to provide quality in education. In this planning, institutional-level evaluation provides information that allows for the establishment of strategies that guide the evolution of this educational level. As an instrument of evaluation, in this exercise a model is applied to predict the performance of students of the program of Mechanical Administrator Engineer of the University of San Luis Potosí starting with their academic course, in the General Examination for Degree Graduation (EGEL) that the National Centre of Higher Education Evaluation (CENEVAL) applies to students. A statistical logistic regression analysis was made with the most significant variables and the model was adjusted according to its correlation with the General Examination for the Degree Graduation results, obtaining a reliability margin of 82%. It is determined that admission exam placement and the overall grade average are the most influential variables to predict performance in the examination. This information contributes to the constant search of higher quality as an essential function of higher education. Recibido: 20 de junio de 2012Aceptado: 14 de agosto de 2012
