Brucella melitensis is the main cause of human brucellosis worldwide and is considered the most virulent and neurotropic species. In Mexico, this species is considered endemic, being reported since the first decade of the 20th century. Here we present a case of subacute transverse myelitis with the isolation and identification of B. melitensis as the causative agent of Neurobrucellosis in a female patient from the coastal state of Guerrero, Mexico.
Foster Kennedy Syndrome is a classic, yet rare, neuro-ophthalmologic syndrome due to an intracranial mass, most often a tumor, that consists of optic atrophy on the same side of the lesion and contralateral papilledema. We present the case of a 48-year-old female patient with decreased visual acuity and the typical clinical features described above due to a sphenoid wing meningioma. Although not a common condition, Foster Kennedy Syndrome should always be kept in mind in a patient with visual disturbances secondary to an intracranial mass.
Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is the most common malignant tumor in HIV-infected individuals. Although its most common form consists of skin and mucosal lesions, it can also present itself in a disseminated way affecting the gastrointestinal tract, lungs and eye structures. We present the case of a 27-year-old male patient with HIV infection and disseminated Kaposi sarcoma. Disseminated KS is an uncommon form of the disease. Therefore, it is important to take this into account, particularly in HIV-infected individuals with characteristic cutaneous lesions.
