Colombia adoptó en 2018 el Estatuto de la Oposición, que se implementó, por primera vez en el ámbito local, durante las elecciones de 2019; sin embargo, solo una minoría de municipios vieron algún partido acogiéndose a la figura para declarar la oposición al gobierno municipal. Exploramos los datos de los 1.092 municipios del país para establecer las razones de la presencia de partidos declarados como de oposición. Se examinan sucesivamente tres hipótesis para explicarla en función de tres variables: la primera busca establecer una relación entre la presencia de partidos declarados y estas tres variables en la elección a la alcaldía. La segunda examina si existe una relación con características propias del municipio; en particular, el número de electores. Después de descartar estas dos hipótesis, se concluye que la declaración de oposición depende, sobre todo, de cuáles son los partidos enfrentados en el plano local, y de la forma como se reproducen las posiciones establecidas a escala nacional.
