Las dinámicas del creer religioso en el universo indígena latinoamericano no se restringen a las múltiples variantes y estrategias del catolicismo colonial. La histórica presencia de grandes misiones protestantes internacionales en los diversos territorios indígenas a principios del siglo xx, así como la reciente pluralización de la oferta y las búsquedas protestantes a finales de este mismo siglo, en particular, alrededor del pentecostalismo étnico y rural, convocan de nuevo múltiples intereses, posiciones, estrategias y adaptaciones religiosas, simbólicas y culturales locales. Este texto aborda algunas de estas variantes del creer protestante entre los indígenas Misak, del departamento del Cauca, en Colombia. A partir de narrativas orales y del análisis de sus representaciones sobre la identidad/alteridad, en particular del Médico Tradicional Misak y del creyente protestante, se reconstruyen algunos de los procesos de quiebre de las profundas polarizaciones establecidas doctrinal, institucional y cosmogónicamente entre estas diversas expresiones contemporáneas del creer indígena. Sin duda, diversas ofertas de religiosidad protestante, ligadas tanto a las misiones interdenominacionales de principios del siglo xx como a las recientes iglesias pentecostales de las tierras bajas del departamento del Cauca, llevadas al Resguardo Indígena de Guambía, se constituyen en referentes que confrontan permanentemente las referencias míticas y rituales Misak. Al mismo tiempo, particulares trayectorias rituales y sociales de este protestantismo étnico, así como una histórica filosofía indígena del contacto, abierta, plural y sincrética, permiten construir diversas resistencias rituales y religiosas étnicas, e incluso puentes simbólicos entre el universo del protestantismo y las prácticas chamánicas ancestrales. Estos permanentes procesos de negociación, de fuga, de adaptación, de fusión o de complementariedad entre referentes simbólicos y religiosos enfrentados, renuevan permanentemente el interés de las diferentes metáforas sincréticas. En este texto, en particular, se analizan las figuras sincréticas de la analogía y la ambivalencia dentro de los procesos de reconstrucción del creer tradicional Misak, en medio de las ofertas y transformaciones étnicas del protestantismo en el Resguardo Indígena de Guambía.
Este artículo aborda la introducción de una misión protestante a un resguardo indígena en Colombia. A partir del establecimiento de los contactos culturales previos, entre ellos el papel del catolicismo y su impacto social y cultural, se exponen las implicaciones locales y regionales de esta irrupción religiosa en medio de una comunidad étnica. Se exploran los diversos intereses y consecuencias de esta nueva colectividad para la historia social de la comunidad indígena, las actividades misioneras, los intereses de los indígenas rebeldes, los contactos iniciales, y en especial, las luchas y manipulaciones que implican la irrupción del protestantismo en medio de una sociedad con referentes y movimientos de tipo étnico, pues estos están en constante tensión y adecuación a partir de la práctica religiosa.
