Bajo el supuesto de que los países pueden seguir un proceso de transformación estructural caracterizado por la diversificación productiva y la sofisticación tecnológica, se toma la economía brasilera como guía para revelar los desarrollos sectoriales de Colombia que tendrían un mayor impacto sobre su integración económica intersectorial. Para lograr este cometido, se construye una matriz insumo-producto para cada país con 35 sectores económicos comparables. Ello implica un trabajo de agregación sectorial que tiene en cuenta las metodologías de las cuentas nacionales de cada país. Con estas matrices comparables se deducen entonces los sectores económicos que más incrementarían los eslabonamientos intersectoriales de Colombia (y la densidad de la matriz insumo-producto de Colombia). Este análisis es importante porque, de acuerdo con algunos análisis estructuralistas, la densidad de la red de eslabonamientos intersectoriales de un país se relaciona directamente con su nivel de ingreso (efecto de nivel) y su dinámica económica (efecto de crecimiento).
