El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la supervivencia y crecimiento de una plantación de Pinus greggii establecida en 2003 en un terreno (2.1 ha) con suelo degradado y escasa precipitación. En especial se evaluó el efecto de las características edafológicas del sitio en el crecimiento de la plantación. Se registraron también la cobertura, la regeneración natural y el material combustible. Para esto, se establecieron 9 sitios circulares de 1/10 ha, en tres bloques de acuerdo a la pendiente del terreno. La supervivencia promedio fue de 91%, con mejores porcentajes en los bloques medio e inferior de la parcela. La altura, diámetro y volumen arrojaron diferencias significativas entre los sitios y bloques, los mayores valores e incrementos se registraron en los árboles de los sitios inferiores del terreno que muestran mayor fertilidad. En promedio la altura fue de 9.4 m, el diámetro de 14.4 cm y el volumen 60.2 m3 r.t.a. ha-1 (metro cúbico de madera en rollo total del árbol en una superficie de 1 ha). En las partes altas del terreno se registró la menor cobertura vegetal (9.6% del suelo), favoreciendo con esto la presencia de elementos vegetales propios de sitios con alta luminosidad, como los magueyes, registrándose en promedio 400 individuos por hectárea. Respecto al material combustible, solo se registró en los sitios inferiores y medios, siendo la biomasa combustible ≥ 5 cm de diámetro la de mayor cantidad (69.2 kg ha-1). Dado que este material se encuentra disperso, no pone en riesgo de incendios a la plantación. Se recomienda realizar preaclareos y podas en los árboles que quedaran hasta el final del turno. Estas acciones reducirán la competencia y aumentaran la calidad de la madera, además de mejorar las condiciones edáficas del sitio mediante la incorporación del material vegetal al suelo.
Para producir plantas en vivero de buena calidad se emplean sustratos comerciales (peat moss-agrolitavermiculita), cuyo costo es muy elevado, lo cual es una limitante para su utilización, pues reduce significativamente los márgenes de utilidad; por lo anterior se necesita buscar sustratos alternativos. El aserrín de pino es un subproducto de la industria forestal barato y disponible en áreas forestales. En los últimos años se ha utilizado como sustrato generando buenos resultados. En el presente trabajo se evaluó el efecto de diferentes mezclas de aserrín de Pinus sp sobre el crecimiento de plantas de Cedrela odorata L. (Cedro rojo), producidas con el sistema tecnificado en vivero forestal cubierto con malla sombra. Se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar donde se estudiaron once combinaciones a base de aserrín + la mezcla de peat moss-agrolita-vermiculita en proporciones que variaron desde cero % hasta 100% de aserrín y la mezcla de sustratos comerciales. A los tres meses y medio de edad las plántulas que se desarrollaron en el sustrato con las mezclas empleadas se midieron y calcularon las variables necesarias. El mayor diámetro se consiguió con la mezcla de 70% de aserrín + 30% de la mezcla peat mossagrolita-vermiculita. El mayor valor en altura se produjo con la mezcla que contenía 80% de aserrín + 20% de la mezcla peat moss-agrolita-vermiculita. El mayor peso seco de follaje correspondió a la mezcla que contenía 90% de aserrín mas 10% de la mezcla peat moss-agrolitavermiculita. Sin embargo el mayor valor de peso de la raíz y peso seco total correspondió a la mezcla con 60% de aserrín más 40 % de peat moss-agrolita-vermiculita. En cuanto a la relación Altura-Diámetro (Índice de Esbeltez), el mejor valor lo obtuvo la mezcla de 80% de aserrín + 20% de peat moss-agrolita-vermiculita. Finalmente, el Índice de Calidad de Dickson (ICD), que se utiliza para predecir el comportamiento en campo de la planta evaluada. Para el mencionado índice, el mayor valor se obtuvo para la mezcla con 60% de de aserrín y 40% de peat moss-agrolita-vermiculita.
Entre los principales problemas que se presentan en la producción de planta en vivero está el uso adecuado de sustratos y rutinas de fertilización que conduzcan a lograr la calidad tanto morfológica como fisiológica de la planta, para resistir y superar las condiciones ambientales del sitio donde serán establecidas. En este trabajo se evaluaron los efectos de diferentes niveles de fertilizante de liberación lenta sobre el crecimiento inicial de Cedrela odorata L. (cedro rojo), producidas en contenedor. Se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar donde se utilizo un sustrato a base de 70% de aserrín + 30% de peat moss-agrolita- vermiculita (60:20:20) respectivamente, con cuatro niveles de fertilizante de liberación lenta Osmocote plus® (15-9-12) 0, 6, 9 y 12 Kg/m3 . A los tres meses y medio de edad, las plantas a las que se les aplicó el nivel de fertilización cuatro (12kg/m3 del fertilizante) presentaron los valores más altos para las variables peso seco de parte aérea, peso seco de la raíz, peso seco total, relación parte aérea/raíz, índice de esbeltez e índice de calidad de Dickson. El nivel de fertilización tres (nueve Kg/m3 de fertilizante) presento los valores más altos para las variables de altura y diámetro. De acuerdo a los resultados obtenidos se presentó una relación directa entre la dosis de fertilización y las variables evaluadas, es decir a medida que se aumento la cantidad de fertilizante se incremento el valor de las variables evaluadas. Sin embargo, la aplicación de 12 kg/m3 de fertilizante ocasiono un ligero efecto de fitotoxicidad que se manifestó en una breve disminución en las variables de altura y diámetro en comparación con el tratamiento de 9 kg/m3 , el cuál, dio como resultado los valores más altos de dichas variables. Por esta razón, y el hecho de que no hubiese diferencia estadísticamente significativa en los datos que arrojaron estos dos tratamientos (9 y 12 kg/m3 ) en todas y cada una de las variables evaluadas para la ejecución de este trabajo, se considera como técnicamente mejor el tratamiento de 9 kg/m3 . Aunado a esto, es pertinente recalcar que en términos económicos, también el tratamiento de 9 kg/m3 es mejor, pues implica un ahorro de 3kg de fertilizante por cada metro cúbico de sustrato a preparar, arrojando prácticamente los mismos resultados en comparación con el tratamiento de 12 kg/m3 .
