La modalidad de aprendizaje en línea es una propuesta instaurada en instituciones de educación superior en varios países de Latinoamérica y del mundo. En el caso de Ecuador, ha tomado más fuerza en el último lustro. Ante ello, las instituciones educativas de nivel superior deben tener claras las particularidades metodológicas y pedagógicas que se requieren cuando la educación se desarrolla de forma virtual, a diferencia de la modalidad presencial. Por ejemplo, se deben tomar en cuenta aspectos procedimentales y contextuales que varían la metodología de enseñanza y de aprendizaje, el rol que tiene el docente-tutor y otros aspectos. El objetivo de este trabajo es fortalecer las bases teóricas de la educación en línea, a través de la propuesta empírica de un caso ecuatoriano que ha sido exitoso en la planificación, diseño, ejecución y evaluación de las carreras. El presente artículo se desarrolla con un enfoque cualitativo de tipo descriptivo, a través de la revisión de literatura relacionada con el tema, de aportes generados por diversos estudios y de la verbalización de la propia experiencia en el desarrollo del diseño instruccional de carreras en línea en la universidad pública más antigua del Ecuador. Como resultado, el lector encontrará una propuesta viable cuyas máximas pueden ser aplicadas de manera real en el planteamiento de nuevas carreras y programas en esta modalidad o para mejorar los existentes.
