Background: The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is a widely used method to assess the clinical performance of students in clinical practice. Although OSCE has been used for undergraduate students of Korean medicine, this has not been widely reported. Methods: In 2020, the practical course for acupuncture and moxibustion medicine (acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, auricular acupuncture, and burning acupuncture) was taught using flipped learning, according to clinical practice guidelines, and assessed by the OSCE. The appropriateness of this model of education and its evaluation using OSCE were evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale, and the results were analyzed. Results: Of the respondents, 67% reported that the OSCE accurately reflected their competency, and 82% reported that online video lectures helped them to improve their clinical skills. The average adequacy score of the model was > 3.7/5, and the average adequacy score of the checklist used in the OSCE was > 4.1/5 for all 5 clinical application skills. The difference in the mean self-efficacy score between students who had taken the OSCE and those students who had not taken the OSCE, was highest in the burning acupuncture group (0.923). Conclusion: This study showed that students’ satisfaction with the OSCE was high and flipped learning was an effective education model. In the future, models representing the human body or simulated patients should be used to evaluate students’ skills and attitude.
Objectives: This study is to report two cases of adult atopic dermatitis improved by Osuyu-tang.Methods: Osuyu-tang was prescribed to two adult atopic dermatitis patients. The patients took Osuyu-tang 3 times a day for 45 days and 50 days, respectively. Results: In case 1 who complained of redness, erythema, edema, exudation, dryness, erosion, lichenification, scaly, and pruritus, skin symptoms improved from 15 to 2, and pruritus also improved from NRS 8 to 2. In case 2 who complained of redness-centered skin symptoms, skin symptoms improved from 15 to 1, and pruritus also improved from NRS 9 to 1.Conclusions: When Osuyu-tang was prescribed to two patients with adult atopic dermatitis, significant improvement was observed. It is thought that Osyyu-tang can be used as the treatment of other similar diseases in the future.
Objectives: This study is to report a case of hypersensitivity vasculitis with petechiae improved by Jeoryoung-tangMethods: Petechiae was observed in the upper and lower extremities of the patient. The patient also complained of cystitis symptoms such as dysuria and residual urine. Since there were no other accompanying symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding, or joint pain, the patient was diagnosed with hypersensitivity vasculitis and Jeoryoung-tang was prescribed for about a month. Results: After administering Jeoryoung-tang for about a month, petechiae improved from 8 to 2 points, and cystitis symptoms also improved from NRS 7 to 2 points. Conclusions: Since it has been confirmed that Jeoryoung-tang was effective as the treatment of skin symptoms through this case, Jeoryoung-tang can be prescribed for patients with other type skin diseases. However, since it is difficult to generalize this single case, continuous follow-up studies should be conducted.
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease that affects millions of people all over the world. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effects of the roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis (GU) and Donkey Hide Gelatin (DHG) water extracts on DNCB-induced NC/Nga mice and TNF-α/IFN-γ treated keratinocytes or LPS-stimulated macrophages. The combined treatment using the water extracts of GU and DHG improved the skin symptom evaluation score and skin histology, with increased expression of the skin barrier proteins Claudin 1 and Sirt 1 in lesion areas. The IFN-γ activity was promoted in PBMCs, ALN, and dorsal skin tissue, while the absolute cell number was reduced for T cells so that the production and expression of serum IgE and cytokines were suppressed. In TNF-α/IFN-γ induced HaCaT cells, IL-6, IL-8, MDC, and RANTES were all inhibited by GU and DHG water extracts, while ICAM-1 and COX-2 levels were similarly downregulated. In addition, GU and DHG water extracts decreased LPS-mediated nitric oxide, IL-6, TNF-α, and PGE2 in RAW 264.7 cells, and the expression of iNOS and COX-2 also decreased. Notably, the DHG:GU ratio of 4:1 was shown to have the best effects of all ratios. In conclusion, GU and DHG have anti-skin inflammatory potentials that can be used as alternative ingredients in the formula of functional foods for people with atopic dermatitis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
