Fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs) cause diseases in domestic chickens, including inclusion body hepatitis (IBH), with immunosuppression believed to play a role in their pathogenesis. To gain a better understanding of the pathogenesis and chronology of disease caused by FAdVs, the gross pathology, histopathology and dissemination of virus were examined at several different time points, after inoculation of one-day-old specific pathogen-free chickens with FAdV-1, FAdV-8b or FAdV-11 via the ocular route. FAdV-8b had a slightly greater virulence than FAdV-11, but both were primary pathogens. The presence and severity of hepatic lesions were used to define the three stages of the disease: incubation (1-3 days post-inoculation, PI), degeneration (4-7 days PI) and convalescence (14 days PI). Both viruses were detected in the liver, kidney, bursa, thymus and gizzard of most birds during the degenerative stage, and persisted in the gizzard into convalescence. The FAdV-1 isolate was found to be apathogenic, but virus was detected in the bursa and/or gizzard of several birds between 2 and 7 days PI. This is the first study examining the chronology of gross and microscopic lesions of pathogenic and apathogenic FAdVs in association with viral presence in multiple tissues. It was concluded that both FAdV-8b and FAdV-11 are primary pathogens, and that these strains may play a role in immunosuppression.
Abstract. Cerebellar abiotrophies have a nonsex-linked, autosomal, recessively inherited basis in a number of species, and lesions typically reflect profound and progressive loss of Purkinje cells. In this report, an unusual form of abiotrophy is described for two sibling Border Collies. Extensive loss of the cerebellar granular cell layer was present with relative sparing of Purkinje cells of two female pups. The biochemical basis for this form of cerebellar abiotrophy is unknown, but the lack of disease in other siblings supports an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance.
Mammalian palatogenesis depends on palatal shelf elevation, medial edge epithelium (MEE) breakdown, and mesenchyme flow. These all require matrix remodeling, which is controlled in part by the family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). We used an organ culture system to examine the effect of a general MMP inhibitor (BB3103) on mouse palatogenesis. Palates cultured in 20 micro M BB3103 contained no active MMP-2, and only one palate fused from a sample size of 15. In this single palate, MMP-3 was present at higher levels than in palates that failed to fuse. MMP-3 is known to be involved in epithelial mesenchymal transformation (EMT), and its persistence may explain why this palate fused. This implies a role for MMPs in normal palatogenesis, and disruption of their activity may result in cleft palate.
Cleft affected children in the region did not receive adequate and regular dental care at the appropriate time. In view of the significantly greater risk of dental disease in clefting, particularly in the deciduous dentition, all cleft affected children should be referred for comprehensive and continued preventive dental care from the first year of life.
A closer investigation of LRP5 and associated Wnt signalling molecules in OA will help determine disease aetiology and the development of novel treatment strategies that specifically target the bone compartment.
Five of 10 pregnant, lactating mares, each with a foal at foot, developed neurological disease. Three of them became recumbent, developed complications and were euthanased; of the two that survived, one aborted an equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1)-positive fetus 68 days after the first signs were observed in the index case and the other gave birth to a healthy foal on day 283 but remained ataxic and incontinent. The diagnosis of EHV-1 myeloencephalitis was supported by postmortem findings, PCR identification of the virus and by serological tests with an EHV-1-specific ELISA. At the time of the index case, the 10 foals all had a heavy mucopurulent nasal discharge, and PCR and the ELISA were used to detect and monitor EHV-1 infection in them. The status of EHV-1 infection in the five in-contact mares was similarly monitored. Sera from three of the affected mares, taken seven days after the index case were negative or had borderline EHV-1-specific antibody titres. In later serum samples there was an increase in the titres of EHV-1-specific antibody in two of the affected mares. In contrast, sera from the five unaffected in-contact mares were all EHV-1-antibody positive when they were first tested seven or 13 days after the index case.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
