Small fly eyes should not see fine image details. Because flies exhibit saccadic visual behaviors and their compound eyes have relatively few ommatidia (sampling points), their photoreceptors would be expected to generate blurry and coarse retinal images of the world. Here we demonstrate that Drosophila see the world far better than predicted from the classic theories. By using electrophysiological, optical and behavioral assays, we found that R1-R6 photoreceptors’ encoding capacity in time is maximized to fast high-contrast bursts, which resemble their light input during saccadic behaviors. Whilst over space, R1-R6s resolve moving objects at saccadic speeds beyond the predicted motion-blur-limit. Our results show how refractory phototransduction and rapid photomechanical photoreceptor contractions jointly sharpen retinal images of moving objects in space-time, enabling hyperacute vision, and explain how such microsaccadic information sampling exceeds the compound eyes’ optical limits. These discoveries elucidate how acuity depends upon photoreceptor function and eye movements.

Abstract. Evidence is presented that suggests that there is a significant self-organized criticality (SOC) component in the dynamics of substorms in the magnetosphere. We assume that observations ofbursty bulk flows, fast flows, localized dipolarizations, plasma turbulence, etc. show that multiple localized reconnection sites provide the basic avalanche phenomenon in the establishment of SOC in the plasma sheet. First results are presented from a study of this avalanche process based on this working assumption. A magnetic field reversal model is discussed. Resistivity, in this model, is self-consistently generated in response to the excitation of an idealized currentdriven instability. When forced by convection of magnetic flux into the field reversal region, the model yields rapid magnetic field annihilation through a dynamic behavior that is shown to exhibit many of the characteristics of SOC. Over a large range of forcing strengths, the annihilation rate is shown to self-adjust to balance the rate at which flux is convected into the reversal region. Several analogies to magnetotail dynamics are discussed: (1) It is shown that the presence of a localized criticality in the model produces a remarkable stability in the global configuration of the field reversal while simultaneously exciting extraordinarily dynamic internal evolution. (2) Under steady forcing it is shown that a loading-unloading cycle may arise that, as a consequence of the global stability, is quasi-periodic and, therefore, predictable despite the presence of internal turbulence in the field distribution. Indeed, it is shown that the global loading-unloading cycle is a consequence of the internal turbulence. (3) It is shown that under steady, strong forcing the loading-unloading cycle vanishes. Instead, a recovery from a single unloading persists indefinitely. The field reversal is globally very steady while internally it is very dynamic as field annihilation goes on at the rate necessary to match the strong forcing. From this result we speculate that steady magnetospheric convection events result when the plasma sheet has been driven close to criticality over an extended spatial domain. During these events we would expect to find localized reconnection sites distributed over the spatial domain of near criticality, and we would expect to find plasma sheet transport in that domain to be closely related to that of BBF and fast flow events.

Significance To move efficiently, animals must continuously work out their x,y,z positions with respect to real-world objects, and many animals have a pair of eyes to achieve this. How photoreceptors actively sample the eyes’ optical image disparity is not understood because this fundamental information-limiting step has not been investigated in vivo over the eyes’ whole sampling matrix. This integrative multiscale study will advance our current understanding of stereopsis from static image disparity comparison to a morphodynamic active sampling theory. It shows how photomechanical photoreceptor microsaccades enable Drosophila superresolution three-dimensional vision and proposes neural computations for accurately predicting these flies’ depth-perception dynamics, limits, and visual behaviors.

We have made a detailed analysis of several periods of the AE time series and find that the average correlation dimension is 3.4. We have generated bicolored noise and shown that it shares many properties with the AE data. We also find that the AE time series is self‐affine such that the affinity exponent changes on a time scale of about two hours, which is a typical length of magnetospheric substorms. We suggest that this same time scale appears as a spectral break at about 5.6 × 10−5Hz (5‐hour period) in the power spectrum of the AE data.

Reliable vision in dim light depends on the efficient capture of photons. Moreover, visually guided behaviour requires reliable signals from the photoreceptors to generate appropriate motor reactions. Here, we show that at behavioural low-light threshold, cockroach photoreceptors respond to moving gratings with single-photon absorption events known as 'quantum bumps' at or below the rate of 0.1 s −1 . By performing behavioural experiments and intracellular recordings from photoreceptors under identical stimulus conditions, we demonstrate that continuous modulation of the photoreceptor membrane potential is not necessary to elicit visually guided behaviour. The results indicate that in cockroach motion detection, massive temporal and spatial pooling takes place throughout the eye under dim conditions, involving currently unknown neural processing algorithms. The extremely high night-vision capability of the cockroach visual system provides a roadmap for bio-mimetic imaging design.

A detailed analysis has been made of 13 periods of 20 days of the AE data. The average correlation dimension is found to be 3.4, and the calculated dimension is found to depend on the magnetospheric activity such that more active periods have smaller dimensions. This apparent correlation dimension does not, however, imply that the magnetospheric system behind the AE data is low‐dimensional. On the contrary, bicolored noise is shown to share many properties with the AE data. The AE time series is also found to be self‐affine such that the scaling exponent changes at the time scale of about 2 hours. This same time scale is suggested to appear as a spectral break at about 1/(5 hours) in the power spectrum of the AE data.
