The term pressure sore is preferred to decubitus ulcer because it describes more accurately the cause of these ulcerations. Although several theories have been proposed linking possible neurovascular changes with their production, the opinion is that the predominant factor in etiology is i-schemia from prolonged pressure which results in necrosis of the skin and underlying tissues. These terms will be used interchangeably in the text.
