En este trabajo se investiga la relación existente entre el tamaño corporal y la abundancia de las especies de macromamíferos representadas en el yacimiento pleistoceno de Venta Micena, utilizando el modelo tafonómico de Damuth. Los resultados obtenidos indican que durante la fosilización se conservó parcialmente la estructura de la comunidad original y que los sesgos tafonómicos acontecidos se deberían, principalmente, a los procesos de meteorización durante la etapa de exposición de los restos esqueléticos previa a su enterramiento definitivo. Estos procesos destructivos afectaron diferencialmente a los restos según su superficie relativa, por lo que se produjo una mayor perdida de información en el caso de aquellas especies de menor tamaño.
En este ensayo se discute el papel que puede desempeñar la morfométria en el desarrollo de la paleontología humana como disciplina de carácter cuantitativo. A modo de ejemplo, se efectúan comparaciones entre las posiciones relativas de puntos de referencia en los rostros de A. robustus y A. boisei, usando el método de las deformaciones principales. Los resultados obtenidos muestran un cambio morfológico de magnitud equivalente, según los valores de energía de curvamiento, a la transformación necesaria para pasar de la vista lateral del craneo en Hyracotherium a la Equus, formas separadas en la evolución de los equidos por más de 50 Ma.; no obstante, ambas energías son superadas por un caso de acentuado dimorfismo sexual en primates (Mandrillus). La conclusión es que se necesita disponer de un marco de referencia que permita contrastar, cuantitativamente, si las diferencias existentes entre dos homínidos fósiles cualesquiera serían suficientes como para considerar que pertenecieron a especies distintas. Esta perspectiva solo se podrá conseguir mediante un amplio estudio morfométrico comparado de poblaciones humanas y del dimorfismo sexual en los pánidos.
