O uso do Simulador Analógico de Manobras (SIAMA) para testes de condução de navios em modelo físico é uma ferramenta útil para identificar possíveis melhorias em projetos portuários e determinação de regras de manobra. Quando aperfeiçoado através de estudos hidráulicos em escala froudiana, o SIAMA torna-se uma valorosa fonte de informações estatísticas para os estudos náuticos. A escala de tempo dos modelos físicos froudianos é determinada pela raiz quadrada da escala linear. No estudo de caso apresentado, a escala dos modelos físicos portuários disponíveis é de 1:170, assim o tempo no modelo é 13,04 vezes mais rápido do que no real. Mais de 1.500 testes oficiais foram realizados desde 1.993, por práticos profissionais em quatro portos distintos de duas Zonas de Praticagem do Brasil. Estes testes de manobras e otimizações de projetos abrangeram nove cais/píeres, com quatorze berços e navios mineraleiros de 75.000, 152.000, 276.000, 365.000, 400.000 e 615.000 tpb. A área portuária estudada abrange canais, bacias de evolução e berços de atracação. Os modelos reduzidos dos navios são controlados remotamente por sistema de rádio frequência e a ação dos rebocadores é reproduzida através da rotação das hélices de ventiladores fixados nas embarcações.
