<p>A compostagem é uma prática antiga, que consiste na decomposição controlada de restos vegetais e estercos, obtendo matéria orgânica bioestabilizada ou humificada. Envolve um processo biológico em que os microrganismos transformam os residuos num material semelhante ao solo orgânico que é denominado composto orgânico, sendo ótima alternativa para a promoção da fertilidade e qualidade dos solos do Semiárido. O trabalho objetivou produzir composto orgânico por meio da montagem de uma composteira para incentivar o uso do adubo orgânico na produção agrícola em agroecossistemas familiares. A atividade foi conduzida na Área de Manejo Agroecológico do Centro de Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Semiárido da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Sumé, Cariri paraibano. A leira com 2,34 x 1,50 x 0,50 m foi montada utilizando-se restos de podas (8 kg), palma picotada (61,100 kg), palhada e bagaço de cana-de-açúcar (24,600 kg), rama verde de jerimum (8,600kg), folhas secas de craibeira (10,900 kg). O material foi colocado em camadas alternadas com esterco bovino curtido (400,75 kg). Para o manejo adotou-se o procedimento de revolvimento e aguação semanalmente, para manter a temperatura em valores ideais à atividade microbiana. Espera-se que ao final de 90 dias todo o material tenha sido decomposto e o adubo orgânico esteja pronto para uso e distribuição com agricultores familiares do município.</p>
