-The effects of aqueous extracts of different plant species on the development of Plutella xylostella (L.) were studied. Leaf discs of kale cultivar Portuguesa, Brassica oleracea var. acephala, were dipped in each plant extract per 30 seconds. Twelve neonate P. xylostela larvae (<12h) were fed on treated leaf discs and kept in petri dishes. The leaf discs were replaced at two-day intervals by fresh leaf discs treated with the plant extracts. Larvae of P. xylostella which fed on leaf discs treated with Melia. azedarach L. and Cissampelos aff. glaberrima St. Hil. delayed their development by 3.5 and 1.7 days, respectively. However, the other plant extracts studied did not affect larva development. Extracts of Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart., Azadirachta indica A. Juss., and A. indica oil formulation caused 100% mortality of P. xylostella larvae, while, the extracts of M. azedarach, C. aff.glaberrima, Laurus nobillis L., Prosopis juliflora DC, Croton sp. and Eugenia uniflora L. caused larval mortality of 96.7, 93.3, 83.3, 66.7, 63.3 and 60%, respectively. The other studied extracts did not cause significant larval mortality. Duration of pupae stage was not affected by the studied plant extracts, however, the extracts of M. azedarach, L. nobillis, C. aff. Glaberrima and Croton sp. caused 100, 90, 66.7 and 65% of pupae mortality, respectively. Discos de couve, Brassica oleracea var. acephala, 'Portuguesa' foram imersos em cada extrato e, após secos ao ar livre, foram inoculados com 12 larvas recém-eclodidas (<12h) de P. xylostella e então mantidos em placas de Petri. As avaliações foram realizadas, a cada dois dias, e os discos foliares foram substituídos por outros, submetidos aos mesmos tratamentos e procedimentos descritos acima. A duração da fase larval de P. xylostella foi alongada pelos extratos aquosos de Melia azedarach L. Cissampelos aff. glaberrima St. Hil. em 3,5 e 1,7 dias, respectivamente. Os extratos de Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart., Azadirachta indica A. Juss. e a formulação de A. indica ocasionaram mortalidade total das larvas, o que não permitiu o cálculo da duração da fase larval. O restante dos extratos aquosos não afetou esse parâmetro. Para os extratos de M. azedarach, C. aff. glaberrima, Laurus nobillis L., Prosopis juliflora DC, Croton sp. e Eugenia uniflora L., a mortalidade das larvas foi de 96,7; 93,3; 83,3; 66,7; 63,3 e 60%, respectivamente. Os demais extratos não afetaram a viabilidade da fase larval de P. xylostella. A duração da fase pupal de P. xylostella não foi afetada pelos extratos, entretanto a viabilidade dessa fase foi afetada pelos extratos de M. azedarach, L. nobillis, C. aff.. glaberrima e Croton sp. com 100; 90; 66,7 e 65% de pupas das quais não emergiram adultos, respectivamente.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Insecta, traça-das-crucíferas, planta inseticida, repolho.

RESUMOA espécie Sitophilus zeamais é uma das principais pragas do milho armazenado no Brasil. O controle é feito, comumente, utilizando-se medidas de higienização e limpeza, bem como inseticidas sintéticos fumigantes e protetores. A busca por produtos menos tóxicos, biodegradáveis e seguros do ponto de vista ecológico, é muito bem aceita pela sociedade. Assim, os objetivos do presente trabalho foram testar a toxicidade de contato e ingestão e fumigante de óleos essenciais e do composto orgânico natural eugenol para adultos de S. zeamais. Termos para indexação: Gorgulho do milho, bioatividade, plantas inseticidas, concentrações letais. ABSTRACTThe Sitophilus zeamais species is a major pest of stored maize in Brazil. The control is made, usually, using measures of hygiene and cleanliness, synthetic insecticides and fumigant protectors. The search for less toxic products, biodegradable and safe from an ecological point of view is very well accepted by society. The objective of this study was to test the toxicity by contact and ingestion and fumigant of essential oils and eugenol natural organic compound for adults of S. zeamais. The values of LC 50 in oil from leaves of Piper hispidinervum, Eugenia uniflora, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, P. marginatum, Schinus terebinthifolius, Melaleuca leucadendron, green fruits of S. terebinthifolius and eugenol compound in tests of contact and ingestion were estimated at 1.0; 11.6, 14.2, 21.1, 57.7, 75.8, 98.8 and 14.8 L/40 g maize, respectively. The toxicity ratios (TR) ranged from 1.3 to 98.8. In the fumigation of adults, the lethal concentrations ranged from 0.53 to 94.7 L/L air, in the following order of toxicity: P. hispidinervum > P. aduncum > S. terebinthifolius > green fruits of S. terebinthifolius > P. marginatum > eugenol, and the TR ranged from 2.0 to 178.7.

-Aceria guerreronis Keifer is considered one of the main pests of coconuts around the world. Amongst the Phytoseiidae recorded on this crop, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) has been reported in association with A. guerreronis. In order to verify whether A. largoensis feeds on A. guerreronis, the biology of this predator was evaluated on different food sources, including A. guerreronis. Three types of diet were tested [Tetranychus urticae Koch + castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) pollen + honey at 10%, A. guerreronis + pollen + honey, and only A. guerreronis], determining its development, survivorship, oviposition, sex ratio and longevity at 27ºC, 60 ± 5% RH 12 h photophase. Fertility life tables were constructed. The duration of the immature phase was lower when feeding only on A. guerreronis, while fecundity was higher when feeding on a prey + pollen + honey. There was no difference in relation to survivorship of the immature stages between the three diets. Parameters of fertility life tables were higher when the diet included A. guerreronis or T. urticae + pollen + honey, although the predator was able to complete its life cycle and reproduce when feeding exclusively on A. guerreronis. The results suggest that A. largoensis preys upon A. guerreronis under natural condition and that it might play some role in the control of the latter.KEY WORDS: Mite, biological control, Cocos nucifera RESUMO -Aceria guerreronis Keifer é considerada uma das principais pragas do coqueiro no mundo. Dentre os Phytoseiidae relatados nessa cultura, Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) tem sido encontrado associado a A. guerreronis. Com o intuito de verificar se A. largoensis se alimenta de A. guerreronis, foi estudada a biologia desse predador com diferentes fontes de alimento, incluindo A. guerreronis. Foram avaliadas três dietas [Tetranychus urticae Koch + pólen de mamona (Ricinus communis L.) + mel a 10%, A. guerreronis + pólen + mel e A. guerreronis isoladamente], avaliando-se o desenvolvimento, sobrevivência, oviposição, razão sexual e longevidade de A. largoensis a 27ºC, 60 ± 5% de umidade relativa e fotofase de 12h. Tabelas de vida de fertilidade foram construídas. A duração da fase imatura foi menor na dieta constituída apenas por A. guerreronis, enquanto que a fecundidade foi maior nas dietas à base de presa + pólen + mel. Não houve diferença entre os valores de sobrevivência das formas imaturas submetidas a diferentes dietas alimentares. Os parâmetros da tabela de vida de fertilidade foram superiores quando a alimentação foi constituída por A. guerreronis ou T. urticae + pólen + mel, embora o predador tenha sido capaz de completar seu ciclo biológico e se reproduzir quando alimentado exclusivamente com A. guerreronis. Os resultados sugerem que A. largoensis seja um predador de A. guerreronis em condições naturais e que possa estar desempenhando algum papel no controle dessa praga.

-Thermal requirements of Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) fed with Tetranychus urticaeKoch at five constant temperatures (18, 20, 23, 26 and 30°C), and the effect of three constant temperatures (20, 23 and 26°C) on the adult stage were studied. The data were used to produce the fertility life tables. The stages of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph and adult egg corresponded to the temperature thresholds of 12.6, 13.1, 11.6, 13.4 and 12.7°C, respectively, and thermal constants of 26.65, 10.27, 16.04, 13.31 and 66.04 DD, respectively. The average duration of a generation (T) varied from 24.3 to 18.5 days at the temperatures from 20°C to 26°C. The highest net reproduction (R 0 = 35,3) and the intrinsic rate of increase (r m = 0,19) were obtained at 23ºC. The highest fecundity rate was registered at 26ºC.KEY WORDS: Mite, biology, Phytoseiid, thermal constant RESUMO -Estudaram-se as exigências térmicas de Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) alimentado com Tetranychus urticae Koch em cinco temperaturas constantes (18, 20, 23, 26 e 30°C), e determinouse o efeito de três temperaturas constantes (20, 23 e 26°C) sobre os parâmetros biológicos da fase adulta do ácaro. Os dados foram utilizados para construir tabelas de vida de fertilidade. Os estágios de ovo, larva, protoninfa, deutoninfa e período de ovo-adulto apresentaram temperaturas base de 12,6; 13,1; 11,6; 13,4 e 12,7°C, respectivamente, e constantes térmicas de 26,65; 10,27; 16,04; 13,31 e 66,04 GD, respectivamente. A duração média da geração (T) variou de 24,3 a 18,5 dias entre as temperaturas de 20°C e 26°C. A maior taxa líquida de reprodução (R 0 = 35,3) e a maior capacidade intrínseca de aumento populacional (r m = 0,19) foram obtidas a 23ºC. A maior fecundidade foi verificada a 26ºC.

Estudou-se o efeito tóxico do extrato metanólico da amêndoa da semente de nim, obtido pelo aparelho de Soxhlet, na mortalidade de ovos e lagartas de Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Para constatação do efeito ovicida, ovos com 24 horas da oviposição foram contados e pulverizados com extrato nas concentrações 1000; 500; 250; 125 e 62,5 mg L-1. As testemunhas foram pulverizadas com água e metanol. O experimento foi mantido, em laboratório, a 25 ± 2°C; UR de 50 ± 10% e fotofase de 12 h. O período de incubação, para todos os tratamentos inclusive as testemunhas, foi em média de quatro dias, sendo que o extrato não afetou a viabilidade dos ovos, embora os valores tenham variado de 51,7% a 80,6%. Lagartas recém-eclodidas foram colocadas em tubos contendo um folíolo de tomateiro, previamente imerso em extrato, nas concentrações de 2000; 4000; 6000 e 8000 mg L-1 e acondicionados na câmara climatizada à 27 ± 1°C; UR: 65 ± 10% e fotofase: 12 h. Aos quatro dias, causaram mortalidade de 82, 68, 94,7 e 100%, respectivamente, sendo que, ao sexto dia, todas as concentrações tinham causado 100% de mortalidade da fase larval. As testemunhas tratadas com água e com metanol apresentaram mortalidade de 4% e 8%, respectivamente.

-The activity of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana towards eggs and larvae of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) was evaluated. Our data showed that the isolates were pathogenic to both developmental stages tested and the eggs were more susceptible than the 1 st instars. The isolates URPE-6 and URPE-19 of M. anisopliae were more pathogenic to eggs and larvae, respectively. The compatibility of these two isolates with the insecticides chlorfenapyr, spinosad, indoxacarb, abamectin, and neem were evaluated. Spinosad and indoxacarb were compatible with the two M. anisopliae isolates in all tested concentrations. At the average recommended concentration, chlorfenapyr was compatible to URPE-6 and abamectin to UFPE-19. The use of entomopathogenic fungi associated with compatible insecticides may be a useful alternative to control T. absoluta.
