Introdução. Este artigo traz uma análise do perfil sócio-econômico, tipos de doenças e número de solicitações de benefício entre pacientes atendidos em ambulatório de neurologia geral do sistema privado de saúde (convênio) e de ambulatório de neurologia do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) na cidade de São Paulo. Método. Estudo transversal com 149 pacientes atendidos no ambulatório de neurologia geral de convênio e 140 pacientes no ambulatório de neurologia do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) na cidade de SãoPaulo, que preencheram um questionário sobre salário e número de pessoas que moravam em casa. O médico incluiu dados relacionados ao diagnóstico, relatórios periciais e intervenções medicamentosasprescritas a cada paciente. Resultados. Como esperado, os pacientes atendidos em convênio possuem uma renda maior que os pacientes atendidos no SUS (p < 0,00001). Os pacientes atendidos no SUS apresentaram maior prevalência de epilepsia (p < 0,00001) e também solicitam um número maior de laudos para benefícios (p = 0,002). Conclusão. Neste estudo preliminar, as duas amostras estudadas diferiram quanto à prevalência de epilepsia e necessidade de laudo técnico para benefício previdenciário, sugerindo que os 2 grupos apresentam doenças e necessidades diferentes, justificandose futuros estudos para facilitar o entendimento e ações específicos de saúde às duas populações.
